Sightseeing

A top attraction in Hawaii, the legendary Na Pali shoreline can only be accessed on foot or by boat or helicopter tour, but it’s well worth it to see what’s often been called one of the most stunning places on Earth. It sits on the north shore of the island and boasts lush, strikingly green pinnacles that soar along the coast for 17 miles, while magnificent waterfalls cascade into narrow valleys. It appears much like it did centuries before, when Hawaiian settlements flourished in the area, existing on the fish they could catch and food they could grow.

Kilauea Lighthouse is one of the island’s most popular attractions, set upon 31 acres at the tip of Kilauea Point on Kauai’s north shore, part of the 203-acre Kilauea Point National Refuge which includes expansive views of the picturesque rugged coastline, a seabird sanctuary, and a National Marine Life Sanctuary. Bring a pair of binoculars and watch for the thousands of migratory seabirds that rest, forage, or nest here, along with green turtles, Hawaiian monk seals and from December to April, humpback whales.

Waimea Canyon is a 14-mile long, one-mile wide, and 3600-feet deep colorful ravine that’s often called Hawaii’s own “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” A near-constant flow of rainwater courses down the Waimea River from Waialeale’s peak, which helps transform young, freshly-exposed lava rock from black to vibrant reds and deep, rich red hues. It’s best viewed from the Waimea Canyon Lookout, and if you can, plan to arrive about an hour before sunset to watch the cliff’s ever-changing colors of red, along with orange and green, when they’re at their most dramatic. Visitors can also take in the views via a helicopter tour.

Beaches

One of the best beaches in Hawaii, Hanalei Bay is a must-see for everyone that visits Kauai. Both travelers and locals have named it as their top scenic spot on the island. The three-mile-long bay boasts a long, half-moon of golden sands that are backed by lush green mountains dotted with waterfalls. Bring a picnic out onto the pier to enjoy a panoramic view of the bay as well as the dramatic ridges of the Na Pali coast while you dine. The pier, built in 1892, has been a popular spot for fishing, swimming, or just hanging out for 125 years.

Tunnels beach offers some of the best snorkeling anywhere in Hawaii during the calm summer months. The backdrop is similar to Hanalei Beach's; the mountains rising behind the beach are gorgeous. Discover the glorious collection of marine life here. Surfers also will enjoy the outermost portions of the reef, where waves are more prominent. Tunnels Beach has one major downside- parking. But you can usually find parking at Haena Beach Park and then walk (to the right) to access Tunnels Beach.

Despite its remoteness, Polihale Beach is a must-see. It's a long, beautiful beach with a view of the NaPali cliffs. Polihale Beach is a long, secluded strip of sand. The final beach in the Napali Coast, it's guarded by the world’s tallest sea cliffs. Driving here, you can't help but feel the excitement. The road is treacherous, and a military base occupies over seven miles of the beach, but the view of NaPali's ending cliffs makes it worth it. You might get less of a tropical island and more of a desert highway on your first trip to Polihale. On a bright sunny day, the flat stretch of Highway 50 between Highway 552 and Polihale Beach can resemble a scene that looks more suited to Arizona than Hawaii.

Shipwreck Beach (often referred to as "Shipwrecks Beach") is a great place to catch some sun on a beautiful (and relatively quiet) beach, to hold a private and romantic ceremony, or to explore the surrounding terrain. Located in Poipu, this beach got its name from an old wooden ship sunk off the coast that has long since faded into the deep blue. The swimming at this beach is often far from ideal because of strong currents and high surf, but its raw, natural scenery, relative seclusion, and romantic atmosphere make up for the lack of good swimming. From the east end of Shipwrecks Beach (far left when facing the ocean), a trail leads up to the top of the hill. The trail continues for several miles, following oceanfront cliff tops, skirting the golf course and stables, and finally delivering you at the near end of Maha Ulepu Beach. One of the beach's main highlights is its proximity to Makawehi Point, a lithified dune. These cliffs can additionally be a popular area for locals to fish.

Anahola Beach is a 1/2-mile long curve of white sand tucked into the back of Anahola Bay. Multiple access points to Anahola Bay exist. The most common is at Anahola Beach Park on Anahola Road, where the restrooms, lifeguards, and campground are located. There is an excellent protected area for children to play and swim in the shallows at the far right end of the beach park, where the sand meets the rocks. Because of the bounding reef, this is one of the safest swimming places on Kauai. ANAHOLA BEACH

This beautiful, golden sand beach is popular for many reasons: Stunning views, plenty of water activities, camping, surfing, or simply lounging and relaxing are a great way to spend some time here- along Kauai's famed North Shore. We said it's an excellent place for water activities, and it is. However, it can have hazardous swimming conditions, especially in the winter, so be aware of local needs and your abilities before hitting the water. Surfing can be first-class in the winter, but it's only for advanced surfers as the waves are very steep and fast, so most surfers here are Haena locals.

The aptly named Secret Beach (also known as Kauapea Beach) provides both seclusion and beautiful scenery. You'll have views over Kauai’s north shore as well as the cliff-dwelling Kilauea Lighthouse. By Hawaiian standards, this is a large beach, measuring nearly 3,000 feet long and up to 100 feet wide. This destination is best known as Secret Beach because access requires more effort than simply parking beachside. To reach Secret Beach you must follow an unmarked, unpaved road to a small parking lot and walk for about 10 minutes on a foot path down to the west end of the beach. This foot path is not exceptionally steep, but it is usually slick and muddy, making the hike down and back up a challenge for some. While access is not especially easy, the reward definitely outweighs the effort once you are oceanside. In addition to the exceptional views, Secret Beach offers surfing, fishing, sunbathing, snorkeling, picnicking, and seashell hunting. Also, in keeping with the theme of secrecy, there are no facilities at this beach, so be sure to bring your food, water, and sunscreen.

Falls

Wailua Falls is the best waterfall in Kauai. Not only is it among the most easily accessed, available for a top-down view from the parking lot, but it is also set in a pristine setting. More appealing still, the spray from the waterfall creates stunning rainbows for much of the day. You may also hear Wailua Falls referred to as Fantasy Island Falls, and it’s not hard to see why. How to Get to Wailua Falls There is ample parking available at the top of the falls as well as a primitive trail to the bottom that is no longer open. Despite the closure, people brave the steep, muddy hike by the dozen daily and it is not uncommon to see 30-50 people spending the day at the base of the falls.

As you approach the ocean, I would suggest being cautious and careful. I didn’t find it to be particularly dangerous, but I could see how not being careful could lead to some issues. At the right time, it appears you can swim/bathe in the pool that’s formed near the falls. When I was there, the waves would have made that wildly impossible to do, so I didn’t even think twice about it. Be careful! Directions: Follow HI-56 north along the shoreline. Enter the town of Princeville. In the town of Princeville, turn right along Ka Haku Road (if you were headed north). Drive along Ka Haku Road past some different condo/resort areas. Turn right onto Punahele Road. This is a road that forms a loop. Continue along Punahele Road to where it turns into Kapiolani Loop. You will see a dirt parking area to your left, enough for maybe 8 or 9 cars. You should not be parking in front of any houses/condos. From there, you should see a trail head at the right side of the parking lot. It’s a pretty easy trail to follow once you’ve found it.

‘Opaeka’a Falls is another one of the best Kauai waterfalls that is fed by the Wailua River. Located just minutes up the road from Wailua Falls, this popular destination is a favorite for tourists who wish to experience the natural beauty of the Garden Isle. The 150-foot waterfall flows through the lush, green jungle with the mountains looming majestically behind. How to Get to ‘Opaeka’a Falls You can view the waterfall easily from the ‘Opaeka’a Falls View parking area. As is the case with nearly every waterfall in Kauai, however, the trail to the waterfall is no longer technically open and has become quite dangerous since no longer being maintained. For this reason, it is recommended you enjoy the scenery from the viewpoint.

The tranquil, paradisiacal feel of Ho’opi’i Falls makes it a top contender for the most beautiful waterfalls in Kauai. While it is not the largest, it is among the most photogenic and less touristy falls on the island. While tourists don’t always find this hidden gem, the locals love it! It is a favorite spot for cliff jumping or just cooling off on a hot afternoon. While this is not “the” Jurassic Falls Waterfall, the scene depicting the Amber Mine was filmed at Ho’opi’i Falls. Activities

It is one thing to explore Kauai by road and a totally different experience to grab a kayak and paddle around the island. Kayaking reveals much of the hidden beauty of the Garden Isle, available only to the intrepid travelers who dare to access them. The island gives you both sea kayaking and inland river kayaking options to choose based on your desired experience. Kauai is famous for its navigable rivers, that facilitate a smooth paddling experience while you bask in the glorious setting. Sea kayaking can get rough and strenuous, depending on the ocean conditions, and is recommended only if you are confident in your physical abilities and have a guide by your side. However, the views in the end are nothing short of magical.
