My Favorite Places to Eat.

If you plan on eating out while you're visiting, here's a couple of casual dining spots to check out. Caliches drive-in, just 1.3 mls south on White Sands. They serve, hot dogs/sandwiches and the best frozen custard with all the fixin's. At 3.5 mls south is Hi-D-Ho's established 1952 also a drive-in, voted #1 cheese hamburger, delicious. Also serving mexican, this is the place the locals recommend. Best to drive through or sit on the covered patio and they'll come to you. If you love hamburgers, you'll have to try Lowes Signature Grocery Store on 10th St. Yes, I did say grocery! Inside there's an experience waiting all of its own, enter and turn right. Just trust me. Now try and decide which place is better, and explore the rest of the store while you're there. Just left of Habitat ReStore on 10th is Amigo's Panadenia Bakery another local favorite. All I can say is the tamales are great, only made on weekends though. Early risers should try the breakfast. Our Country Kitchen on the corner 12th & New York is another breakfast/lunch destination, they have a dish called "The Mountain Man" better go hungry!
Sunset evenings is the best time to go.

MOVING HERE THINGS TO DO.

Welcome to wide open spaces, blue skies and the open road! You've arrived, now where to go and what to see? In town attractions are varied so there should be something for everyone. But, of course your first stop should be White Sands. Locally though, there's the swimming pool, rec center and library that offer summer fun for all ages.
The museum sits at the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains, with a view of White Sands in the Tularosa Basin, stretching out to the Organ Mountains on a clear day. The Planetarium is located next door.

The zoo is family friendly, inexpensive, with shade, seating and a play area, good for all ages. Excellent choice if you have a spare couple of hours. Just north is the Train Depot that has working model trains and a ride that goes around the park.

Must Do Day Tripper

Welcome to the desert, sun, fun and lots to see. Within a hour in any direction you will find things to do. Take plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen and a full tank of gas, some out of town areas are quite isolated with little or no services. White Sands is of course the main destination, don't forget your sand saucer.
Definitely the place to go to make your trip memorable. Bring your bucket & spade, saucer & wax for sliding down the dunes, sold at the gift store. Speaking of the gift store, you can also learn about why there is gypsum in the middle of the Tularosa Basin, very interesting. Just remember, it's a fun day with very little shade so be prepared.

Time to cool down a few degrees? Head into the mountains. Hwy 82 east takes you to Cloudcroft and the Lincoln National Forest. A quaint town, with shops, places to eat and quite a few visitors in the summer. The Lodge is set in the Sacramento Mountains, a Victorian-style hotel worth viewing or enjoy fine dining at Rebecca's at the Lodge.
