Local Adventures

Here are our recommendations for what to do in and around Skagit Valley.
Sauk Mountain Road is 2 miles east of us on Highway 20. It will take you within 2 miles of the peak, on a gravel road that is steep and bumpy, and may be impassible if there is snow. From the lookout there is an awesome view down Skagit Valley in the midst of the alpine terrain. An incredible switchback trail will take you to the summit. Watch for glacier lily and listen for marmots.

Rockport State Park has miles of beautiful trails through old growth forests. Washington State Discover Pass is required for parking, these cost $10/day or $30/year. A short hike on the south side of Highway 20 takes you to a bench overlooking the confluence of the Sauk and Skagit Rivers. To access it, cross the highway from the parking lot and walk west to the trailhead. Watch for mushrooms along the trail.

North Cascades National Park is a phenomenal wilderness. Stop at the ranger station in Marblemount (take the left on Ranger Station Road before town) to learn all about the many trails and sights, dams and lakes, back country challenges that await. The Newhalem Visitor center has exhibits and info too.

Bar Creek Falls: a short mile pretty hike to sweet forest falls on Barr Creek on Skagit Landtrust land. (Ambitious hikers can continue up old Sauk Mountain trail toward the summit though the trail is somewhat difficult to follow and it's a serious hike.) Parking for the trailhead is 4 miles east on 20, after milemarker 98, take a left on Conrad Rd and look for sign on left and two car parking spots.
