Alvor used to be a small fishing village. It has expanded but you can still see the fishermen repairing their nets and there are restaurants selling the fresh fish nearby.
For those of you who love adventure, there is a flying club where you can go paragliding and see spectacular view of the Western Algarve!

Silves is a historic and delightful town, which was originally the ancient capital of the Algarve.
Visit Silves Castle built by the Moors, an imposing red brick castle, with impregnable town walls, and the Gothic cathedral, built on the site of a magnificent mosque. Explore the sloping cobbled streets of Silves with its distinctly Portuguese ambience, with open-air cafes, and a relaxed pace of life.

Take a drive up to Monchique and look down on the Algarve coastline. It is a very scenic drive and you can stop and try out the local water which come straight off the mountains - if you can get to the water as the locals drive up and fill up their many bottles of the fresh water!

I have eaten here twice and both times the food was delicious! The second visit was on a Sunday and thank goodness we had booked as it was packed with Portuguese - always a good sign!! I can recommend the Iberian pork, absolutely delicious!!

Monchique
Take a drive up to Monchique and look down on the Algarve coastline. It is a very scenic drive and you can stop and try out the local water which come straight off the mountains - if you can get to the water as the locals drive up and fill up their many bottles of the fresh water!
Monchique is a small village perched on the way down the mountain and has very narrow streets. There are several restaurants but my favourite is A Charette. Baptista is a family owned supermarket which stocks both local and British groceries, lovely fresh brea and baking goods and has a large stock of Portuguese wine red, white and rose, as well as soft and alcoholic drinks. You can stop for a morning coffee and Pastel de Nata - the delicious local custard tart!
