Authentic NY bagels for everyday NYers. This is a great place to sample bagels for this first time and then come back. They're busy in the mornings. The only thing I don't like is that my clothes always smell like I was working in their kitchen, but it's a small price to pay. Recommended.

Peruvian. I may be too much of a ceviche snob to be objective, but I find theirs to be on the overly acidic side -- for that you're better off taking the trip into the west village (see Panca). Otherwise, they have an AMAZING Aguadito de Pollo (Cilantro rice chicken soup). These guys fill up on the weekends. Reservations recommended.

Drinks & Nightlife

Had to put this in the everything else category -- it's both a restaurant and a stand up comedy venue. In my limited experience, the comedy is so-so as a lot of up-and-comers get their start there. Free on weeknights for comedy. The mexican food is not bad and fairly priced.

Shopping

Well known Macy's is a close ride. If weather is nice, get off at Times Sq and walk south on 7th Ave. Guests from out of the country will be surprised at the relative bargains on high end brands. Tip: each clothing item in NYC under $110 is free of sales tax Tip: go to customer service and get a tourist card -- it will save you 10% on most purchases.

Strangely still not widely known. I use this app for inexpensive rides in Manhattan. Only drawback are the wait times. Prices change, but a ride anywhere below 110th street (in Manhattan) will cost around $10. http://gett.com/nyc/
