The famous skinny bridge across the river Amstel and opposite of the Carré theatre, is an Old Dutch design wooden bridge known as a double-swipe (balanced) bridge. Tradition relates that the bridge was named after the sisters Mager, who were supposed to live on opposite sides of the river. They are said to have had the wooden bridge built to make it easier to visit one another. However it appears more likely, that the original bridge acquired the name from being so narrow (mager means skinny in Dutch), that it was hard for two pedestrians to pass one along another.

As the name suggests, the large, busy terrace is the star of the show at the Westergasterras. The café is in Westerpark, in one of the converted 19th-century industrial buildings of the Westergas. It’s a great place for a drink, and there’s also an impressive lunchtime and evening menu. The spacious terrace has a view of the imposing gasometer, contrasting with a pretty water garden to the side. This is literally a hidden hot spot in Amsterdam. Cross the water by ferry (already a treat by itself!) to ‘Buiksloterweg’ and you’ll hit the Tolhuistuin Restaurant to your left-hand side. Downstairs is a concert hall, a successful branch of the legendary club ‘Paradiso’ in the center. But since ‘tuin’ means ‘garden’ in Dutch, the curious visitor who comes in search of an actual garden will be very rewarded: there’s a good vibe in this garden with a little stage for Sunday afternoon concerts, a café/bar, sometimes a spontaneous barbecue, groups of people doing yoga, meditation or just flex-working with their laptops- everything is possible here and activities are generally free of charge. The only disadvantage and probably the explanation why this spot is not yet overcrowded: information about activities is hard to find and most things happen spontaneously…

Over in hip Noord there’s NDSM, an industrial hotspot that’s home to art exhibitions, cultural happenings and PLLEK restaurant. Locals head here on the weekend to hang at the small beachfront strip and swim in the River IJ. You don’t have to drag your whole beach kit along to feel the sand between your toes. There’s often live music playing and a decent selection of beer and burgers on offer too.

The vibes are always high. Kick back on a day bed sipping rosé, then head to the beer terrace as the sun sets to sample local brews and play ping-pong with your crew.
