Vegan fine dining. Yes, it's a thing. And True Bistro is exceptional. You will forget about what you're not eating. Really. Great cocktails, too. Reservations not required but recommended on weekends. Btw, the dining is fine, but you don't have to be dressed to the nines to fit in.

Delicious Mediterranean/Middle Eastern cuisine. Comfy couches and pillows in the lounge make this a great spot to relax with friends over apps and drinks or dinner. In the summer, they have a small but beautiful patio with a garden that feels remarkably distant from the street. Friendly, welcoming staff.

This place looks pretty shabby from the outside, but the Chinese dumplings (pot stickers) that are made here have a cult following. They're so good that a friend from NYC *must* stop there on his way back to the city to pick up a bag of frozen dumplings to take home! You can ignore the rest of the menu, it's nothing special.

Oleana's little sister. Sarma is a hip, elegant restaurant with a terrific cocktail list and stunning small plates or entrees. Some nights might require reservations, but it's worth trying to get in to bar or social area seating (shared tables) if you're alone or a party of two. Grab a drink, and if you're overwhelmed by the menu selection, just sit back and wait for the staff to bring out special edition tapas on platters, dim sum style. Just select from their rotating trays, sit back and enjoy. The food quality is very high, the atmosphere is casual but festive. Far superior to any of the other tapas style places in the area.

Tiny neighborhood soul food restaurant, best for take out unless you manage to get a seat at one of the two small dining room tables. Super friendly and welcoming staff, terrific bbq, rotating specials, and an array of side dishes that will make your mouth water. Try a Jamaican beef patty while you wait for your order. The fried chicken is amazing- that's one item you might want to eat right away so you can enjoy the skin while it's deliciously hot and crispy. Know also that the chicken takes about 20 minutes, because it's cooked to order. Save room for banana pudding or their delicious pie.

No cover, live music every night. Check out the calendar to see who's in residence. Every Sunday afternoons hang out with locals for "Sunday Spins"- a turntable takes center stage and participants take turns playing a selection of records, both albums that belong to the house and what people bring specially to play. At the bar? Making friends? Want to feel like a local? Ask the bartender for the handwritten rules for the house card game and a deck of cards. Full bar, limited menu (a small but tasty selection of burgers). http://toadcambridge.com/

Parks & Nature
It might sound kooky or goth to recommend you tour cemetery, but Mount Auburn is one of the most gorgeous parks in the metro Boston area. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who is perhaps better known as the landscape architect who designed New York's Central Park and Boston's own Emerald Necklace park system, Mt Auburn is America's first garden cemetery, it opened in 1831 and now a National Historic Landmark. Admission is FREE, though their maps and guides have suggested donations of a few dollars each. Take an audio or self guided tour of the historic monuments, a who's who of Boston society from the late 19th century to the present day. The landscape itself is gorgeous, full of wildlife. Go early on weekend mornings to meet others passionate about bird watching and nature photography. Take in the great view of the whole region from Washington Tower (seasonal), particularly beautiful in the fall. Please note that this is an active cemetery, so walking and some driving is permitted, but no jogging, bicycling, or picnicking is allowed. (Pro tip- take a stroll around and then stop in to the bakery Sarma just up the road for a treat.)

While a short MBTA ride away in Cambridge, Harvard's museums are well worth a visit. The art museum just reopened after a 100M renovation. Highlights include the epic Glass Flowers (The Ware Collection of Blaschka Glass Models of Plants )http://hmnh.harvard.edu/glass-flowers and the New England Forests, "a multi-media exhibition that explores the natural history and ecology of our regional forests, their responses to human activity, and their environmental significance. Visitors are invited to explore the ecology of woodland caribou, wolves, and other wildlife of New England; learn about lichen cities that cling to rocks; and discover the circle of life within and around a forest pond, from tiny aquatic insects to giant moose." Dave's made its reputation on their amazing array of fresh, handmade pasta cut to order, but they also carry a fabulous selection of cheeses, fine local foods including local eggs and dairy (milk in glass bottles!), a great wine selection, frsh produce, lots of local and unusual imported specialty foods, and a sandwich board that will blow your mind. All December long the silly and suggestively titled holiday alt-favorite "The Slutcracker" -a saucy burlesque variation on the Nutcracker- plays to sold out audiences. Otherwise, the theater always has a great selection of current films, both mainstream and indy, and often hosts special screenings of documentaries and local interest films. Snack bar serves sweets, ice cream, beer and wine.

Flatbread makes wood fired pizza in half the space- the rest of the space is the former home of Sacco's, a vintage bowling alley where you can try out Candlepin Bowling, a regional style with small bowling balls and narrow pins. Make reservations for lanes in advance on weekends and during the school year, it's a popular place for birthday parties (adults and kids). If you are dining solo, check out their bar, the top of which is made from one of the bowling lanes that was displaced in the renovation. You can sip a beverage and watch all of the sporting action.
