Food scene

Pedersgata is the Main Street just parallel to my apartment in St. Hans Gate 8. It’s an up-and-coming food scene in Stavanger with new restaurants appearing frequently, tying together the harbour area, and the trendy Stavanger Øst area. You’ll find restaurants from all corners of the world, along with wine bars, pubs and some quirky shops. Take it from a local - the best food and drinks scene in Stavanger is not the harbour or touristy (but pretty) old town. Move east, or to the famous Fargegata for the best vibes and experiences. Enjoy!
Amazing pizza, just a two-minute walk away from the apartment. It is best for take-away or delivery. My favourite is the artichoke pizza!

Best gelato in town. Please don’t go inside and ask for ice cream! They’ll send you packing… This is the real Italian deal. My go-to combination is chocolate gelato and lemon sorbet.

I love this little parlour, ran with authentic Mexican food in mind. You’ll find no Tex Mex here. I love the fried taco rolls with potato or hibiscus. I always get the vegetarian option from here, but the menu changes frequently - have fun exploring. It’s good for lunch, but a bit expensive to fill a very hungry stomach for dinner.

Great Pakistani food. I have always ordered the spinach paneer dish from here, with peshwari naan, but all your traditional Indian/Pakistani dishes are here and very well made.

Great little sushi place with a more messy, street food style approach to sushi. Sushi is not inexpensive in Stavanger, but it you crave you can have it here. Delicious!

Local and cheap lunch! For 80 kr you can get a good sized portion of your favourite style noodles with spring rolls or Korea style chicken wings or toner protein. Delicious and super quick Asias style lunch. They only serve until 4 pm, and I highly recommend it for lunch.

Nightlife

It’s a big deal in Stavanger to have the year’s first “outdoor drink”, locally named “utepils”. We love to sit outside in any temperature, as long as it’s sunny. That’s why you’ll see a lot of us sitting outside relatively early in the day! It might also be because I’m old (33) that I don’t have any clubbing recommendations! But honestly, Stavanger “nightlife” is best enjoyed from 5 pm to sunset. Here are my favourite spots to enjoy the famous “utepils” and a few other places to drink the night away.
Locally brewed beers on tap. Cool, industrial vibe with options to sit inside, in a conservatory, or outside in the park area. any weather, any taste in beers! They even have a micro brewery on site. I never go here for the food, but go for the quiz, the beverage selection and the vibe.

You can literally see this wine bar from the main door of my apartment. It has a rustic vibe and lovely staff. Get some wine recommendations and tastings, the best olives in town, and couple with their sourdough bread and whipped butter. Enjoy!

Neighborhoods

Øvre Holmegate (more famously known as Fargegata) is a picturesque and (as the name suggests in Norwegian) colourful street in Stavanger city centre. It’s best known for the good vibes, especially for drinks and sitting outside in relatively cold weather - thanks to all the heated outdoor seating. My favourite spot is sitting with a beer, street side, in Bøker & Børst, or enjoying the best cocktail in town (the Nordic Daquiri) from Pjoltr & Punsj.

The most interesting part of the Stavanger Øst neighbourhood is located at the end of Kvitsøygata. Here you’ll find T-Time wine bar (and Norway’s only vinyl press), Øst pub, Fortou Asian style street food, and frequent events such as pop up art galleries, concerts and more at Tou Scene. Perfect for a night out, soaking up some sun and enjoy some good company outdoors with views towards the sea and the amazing Ryfylke mountains.

Godalen is a nearby recreational area, perfect for swimming on a good day, or just enjoying the good views. I often take my runs here, but it’s also good for a nice stroll, or to just hang out on a nice day. This is the place to go for sea and mountain views, swimming in the sea, BBQ, and more.

Lysefjorden

Lysefjorden is an amazing, scenic area you’ve probably already heard of. It’s world famous! You can get a cruise exploring it from below from the main harbour, but if you are able, the best way to explore Lysefjorden is on foot. Rent a car and try out my favourite hikes: Hatten (super scenic, and relatively short), Preikestolen (Iconic, 4-5 hour hike including breaks), Sokkaknuten (easy hike with amazing views of the fiord mouth), Kjerag (a more strenuous hike, but all the more exciting and iconic. A 6-7 hour hike). Use the ut.no app to find locations, maps and instructions for each hike.

Kolumbus public transport service

The Kolumbus app can be downloaded from the App Store, and you can purchase tickets here that count for Stavanger and proximity. The ticket works for most speed boats, trains, buses and if you purchase a period ticket, the city bikes. The nearest city bikes are located by the Scandic hotel, and can be used all over town and surrounding areas. There is a city bike rack and bus stop (the “Bekhuskaien” stop, bus 1) almost right outside my apartment.

Order food from Foodora or Wolt

If you’re feeling lazy (or ill), download the Foodora or Wolt apps to get food deliveries right to the kitchen. Let the delivery person know that the address should be Mellomgata 6, and to deliver through the street level kitchen window. Open the right kitchen window when they phone you for the delivery. Super easy, and you didn’t even have to get dressed.

Grocery shops

I buy my groceries from Coop Prix, just 5 minutes walk away from the apartment. Check it out on Google Maps for directions. Nearby you can also find Kiwi and Coop Extra. If you need something on a Sunday, you’ll have to go to Joker on Storhaug. Joker is a 10 minute walk away, mainly uphill.

Rules for buying alcohol in Norway

The age limit for enjoying alcohol up to 22% ABV in Norway is 18, and 20 for anything stronger. Note that only alcohol up to 4.6% ABV is allowed in regular grocery shops. The sale ends at 8 pm on weekdays and 6 pm on on Saturdays. Separate rules may be enforced on bank holidays and the day before bank holidays. For anything stronger than 4.6% (normal beer) you have to go to Vinmonopolet. The neerest location is a 5-10 minute walk away from my apartment. Vinmonopolet usually shuts at 6 pm weekdays, and 4 pm Saturdays. Sundays are always closed.
