Parks & Nature
The hike to Preikestolen - the Pulpit Rock - is one of the most famous hikes in Norway. The hike is possible from about late April to October, depending on winter snowfall, and gives a beautiful view of the Lysefjorden area. The hike begins at the carpark at Preikestolhytta. To get there take the ferry from Stavanger to Tau, then the bus service to the car park. The bus service (kolumbus) runs Saturday and Sunday from mid-May to mid-September, and every day from late-May to late-August. There is also a combined ferry/bus ticket offered by Tide, running from 8/4 - 1/10 2017, but more expensive!

Solastranden is a pretty, sandy beach close to Stavanger Airport Sola. It is nice to walk along the seaside in any season, and in summertime it is even great for swimming. Unfortunately it is not too easy to get to by public transport, but there are both local buses and the Airport bus running to Sola Airport. If you get hungry the Sola Strand Hotel serves food/drinks for beach walkers in beach clothes also :)

If you arrive the Stavanger-area without a car and you wonder what to climb next when you are finished with Preikestolen/Pulpit Rock, visit the mountains and hills of Sandnes instead! Dalsnuten has an altitude of 324 m. A refreshing walk through easy terrain to the summit rewards you with a nice view of the Stavanger/Sandnes area. From Sandnes take the bus to Gramstad or Dale. You can also get to this area by boat from Stavanger to Hommersåk.

Arts & Culture
The Norwegian Canning Museum is a small museum in the heart of Old Stavanger with exhibitions about the canning industry and worker's history. It is located in a former canning factory. On the first Sunday of every month, plus Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer season, the smoking ovens are lit. On these days you can sample freshly smoked brisling sardines straight from the ovens.
