The North-South line (completed in 2018) is a sore point in Amsterdam. The construction of this additional underground line has exceeded every planning and budget limit, and on top of that, has caused a significant nuisance. In 2018 and 2012, several monumental seventeenth-century houses along Vijzelgracht sagged 15-23 centimetres becuase of the construction work, forcing residents to temporarily leave their homes.

This very crooked free-standing house was built in 1695 as the lockkeeper's house, opposite to Rembrant House Museum. One of the oldest pictures of this lock was painted by Rembrant when he still lived across from it. In the last twenty years Sluyswacht had been a cafe.
This peaceful and secluded inner courtyard is right in the middle of the busy city centre. Beguines, unmarried women who cared for the sick and elderly, used to live here from the fourteenth century onwards. Today only women live in these typically Dutch townhouses. If you look closely, the houses look like a row of crooked teeth. The wooden house is the oldest one in Amsterdam, and dates from about 1528.

The buildings on Rokin used to be near the water, but this last section of the Amstel River was drained in the 1930s. A Persian rug store and an art dealer were initially located here. In 2003 the building was vacant and was squatted twice in a year. It has since been renovated, but has retained its distinctly crooked shape.

Check out the crooked house on Spiegelgracht 6! THis tiny house with it clock gable comfortably rests on its neighbour. The seventeenth-century Spiegelgracht, a canal opposite the Rijksmuseum, is lined with galleries, art shops and jewelers, and has several crooked houses. Canal houses often leaned forward so their façades wouldn't be damaged when hoisting goods up into the attic. It also protected them from rain.

Quite a gory scene this. It depicts three meat inspectors around a butchered cow. On the left side a butchered sheep. Originally this gable stone was located in Sint Pieterspoortsteeg. On the ground floor of a now demolished church was a large meat hall where the inspectors' guild convened. The stone was moved in 1944 and restored in 2008.

This tiny church, surrounded by high street shops, offers a silent refuge from the busy Kalverstraat. It history goes back to the 17th century and the aftermath of the Reformation, when it was founded as a conventicle where Catholics could convene in silence. It was located behind a bird shop, hence the name "De Papegaai" (the parrot).

A great botanical garden! The bonatical garden of Amsterdam University opened in 1638 and has over 4.000 different plant species. This quiet and isolated green paradise was a centre for study and innovation. Take the first plant of the widely distributed Brazilian coffee: it was bred in the Hortus, after arriving in Amsterdam from the Middle East in 1706. The rare Victoria water lily is another eye-catcher.

This is the Zevenkeurvorstenhofje. These almshouse were built in the middle of the 17th century by elderly Roman-Catholic ladies of irreproachable conduct to accommodate the underprivileged. Several years ago, the houses were renovated and consolidated into 12 houses, which are rented out by a housing association.
