Hiking

Just across the street from us, behind the Vashon Community Cares facility, you’ll find the entrance to Shingle Mill Creek trail. The trail descends about 2 miles west to Fern Cove. Depending on the time of year, hikers are likely to see deer, salmon, sea otters, bald-eagles, and more.

Don’t let the ballpark fences fool you- this place is so much more. You’ll find a network of trails at the edges of the ball field that wind in and out of the surrounding evergreens.

Food scene

The Ruby Brink is one of our favorite spots to grab a drink or a delicious meal. Don’t let the fact that it’s also a butcher shop dissuade you if you’re a vegetarian. There are always delicious options for plant-based diners. The menu changes daily based on what their chefs find from local farmers- and the food never disappoints. There’s also an amazing cocktail menu that also changes pretty regularly.

Not just the best (and only) Thai food on the island, but perhaps some of the best Thai food we’ve ever tried. Visitors from Western Washington make the trip to Vashon just to visit May Kitchen + Bar- and the trip is definitely worth it. While they’re not offering sit-down dining right now due to COVID restrictions, they do offer carry out. But order early! They tend to sell out fast.

Sightseeing

On a clear day, Tahoma (Mt. Rainier) will peek through, providing a breathtaking background for the historic lighthouse. Even on cloudy days, though, this is at the top of our list for sightseeing. If the time is right (usually late summer / early Fall), you may even catch a group of Orcas passing through as they make their annual pilgrimage through the Salish Sea / Puget Sound. Please be mindful of your distance if you see a young seal- and always keep your pets leashed to protect the local critters.
