Fire Creek Falls. This remote area offers excellent trout fishing, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, and camping. The 25-mile Rim Trail in the Fires Creek Backcountry Area, is a hiking trail, however, some trail sections are open to horses. As the name implies, the Rim Trail climbs the ridge around Fires Creek and makes a large loop. The trail offers vistas as it crosses several highelevation balds. Paved trail makes for a nice walk around the river. Walk along the river and then up into downtown Murphy. Stop, get lunch or a beer, and then walk back to your car. Very pleasant and easy walk for all! There is also a public playground along the hike that makes a nice stop for kids. Hiwassee St Konehete Park, Murphy, NC 28906

In the far West part of Cherokee County NC is an Amazing Part of History & Engineering ! Construction began on July 15, 1936 and was opened February 8, 1940 as part of the Tennessee Valley Authority's push to provide power to a secret government facility to help win World War 2. The Hiwassee dam impounds the Hiwassee Lake of 6,000 acres , and its tail waters are part of Appalachia Lake . The Drive to the dam is a nice two lane road with beautiful vistas and chances to pull off for amazing pictures especial during the fall when the leaves are fallen. There are 3 Picnic areas one at the bottom of the dam near the spill way which has boat access to the Hiwassee river that goes into Tennessee. There you can look up at the dam and at the two generating units with a net dependable capacity of 124 megawatts. . The Second one is across the top of the dam on the right. There you will find plenty of parking , rest rooms and a visitors center with lots of info about the dam and lake. And last is the picnic area across the road from the visitors center with plenty of picnic tables This is a great place to enjoy a fun day for Free with the family as there is no charge for visiting. I highly recommend you visit if your in the area. The Hiwassee Dam stands Surrounded by the Nantahala and Cherokee National Forests, Hiwassee and the adjacent Appalachia Reservoir serve as a rich habitat for deer, wild turkey and other animals. Below Hiwassee Dam, a day-use park on Apalachia Reservoir provides access to boating, fishing and paths for exploring the reservoir and its tributaries. Hiwassee Reservoir has a flood-storage capacity of 205,600 acre-feet. It has two generating units with a net dependable capacity of 124 megawatts. It is surrounded by the Nantahala and Cherokee National Forests. Hiwassee Reservoir is located on the Hiwassee River in western North Carolina, stretching 22 miles northwest to southeast. It is immediately upstream from Apalachia Reservoir. The Hiwassee Reservoir is exceptionally beautiful and well suited for canoeing, rafting and learning the basics of whitewater boating. The flow of water in the reservoir comes from deep below the surface and is chilly, even in the summer. 267 Blue Eagle Cir, Murphy, NC 28906-7204
