Rome’s famous quarter of Monti dates back to the ancient times of Forum Romanum. Back then, it was a densely populated region where the poorest citizens lived. Nowadays, Monti is the most popular, together with Trastevere, quarter of the city, where the best hip cafés, bars, and vintage shops can be found. Unlike Trastevere, Monti is located in the very center of the city, only a few minutes on foot from the iconic Colosseum.

The Passeggiata del Gianicolo, from which you can enjoy one of the most evocative views of the historic center of Rome, consists of two large avenues lined with plane trees, bordering the Villa Aurelia, which meet in Piazzale Garibaldi. Where is it : Town Hall I, Rione XIII - Trastevere Period : 2nd half of the 19th century Size : 3.5 hectares Entrances : via Garibaldi, Sant'Onofrio climb They then continue on a single road that descends in hairpin bends towards the church of Sant'Onofrio, built to complete the Promenade in 1939. The area, the scene of the heroic events of the fighters for the Roman Republic in 1849, was transformed in 1883 by the new Italian institutions on a public walk and dedicated to the memory of the Defense of Rome. At the edges of the avenues are the busts of illustrious Garibaldi soldiers who fought for the defense of Rome in 1849.

Trastevere is one of the most pleasant neighbourhoods in the city. Its peaceful and bohemian atmosphere is capable of dazzling tourists without failing to attract assiduous Roman citizens. The life of the neighbourhood is especially concentrated around the Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, where you can see the ancient Basilica of Our Lady in Trastevere. The great fountain in front of the temple serves as a meeting place, a resting spot, or simply somewhere to have an ice cream on a hot day. A walk through the narrow cobbled streets of the Trastevere shows hidden treasures such as modest medieval churches, small shops with the most unusual objects, or even some scenes of everyday life seemingly taken from a forgotten age.

Castel Gandolfo is just about the perfect place to visit on a day trip from Rome. Easily reached from the center of town by train or by car (it’s an easy 45 minutes ride from Termini train station), this small town on the Castelli Romani (a group of small towns on the Colli Albani) is located on the shores of the beautiful volcanic Albano Lake. Once a favorite of Roman aristocracy, Castel Gandolfo is home to the Pope’s summer residence and one of its main landmarks is indeed the Papal Palace.
