Sightseeing

You can easily take the tram number 2 for EUR 2,20 to Günterstal and hop on the bus to take you to the Schauinsland "Talstation" (station in the valley). The trip takes about 45 minutes from here. You can hike up the mountain or purchase your ticket to ride the aerial cable car to the top of the mountain or "Bergstation". One- or two-way tickets are available, so if you prefer to ride up and hike down, that's also possible. On a clear day you will have stunning views of the valleys and the Swiss alps in the distance. On Sundays they sometimes have a special with a ticket that covers the cable car ride as well as a buffet brunch in the restaurant at the top of the mountain.

As with most German cities, the old town has a open market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, whereby Saturdays the market is larger. The market is situated at the Münsterplatz or area surrounding the Münster--the tall cathedral in the pedestrian zone in the center of town. Freiburg is also known for it's charming "Bächle" or little brooks, which run for miles throughout the city. In the hot summer months, you will see people cooling their feet or children playing in the Bächle, which is fed by the river Dreisam.

Entertainment & Activities

Europa Park is probably the largest and best amusement park in Germany and is only 30 minutes away by car. Flixbus also takes you there from the Freiburg train station for around 8 Euros per person (one-way). You could spend a day at the park and still wouldn't see everything, so you have to pick and choose. A weekday is best, and if possible you should go when the German schools aren't on vacation. Waiting times at a ride can be 30 to 90 minutes, depending on whether the schools are out.
