Sightseeing

Walk along the coastal path to the marina, you will love it. The views are spectacular and there are lovely places to eat, such as Zest and Anna's. If you turn left on exiting from the front of the cottage, follow the stone wall ahead of you on your right, then you will see an opening in the wall and a footpath across the field, leading to the coastal path. Once on the path turn right and follow it to Whitehaven. You will have the coast of Scotland ahead of you as you approach and will pass Jonathan Swifts house, on the left, as you start to descend into the marina. As you return you will be able to see the Isle of Man across the Irish Sea, to the south west and will start to see St Bees lighthouse on the cliffs. The return path continues southwards past Miners Cottage and on towards St Bees, passing a bird sanctuary. If you are very lucky you can see puffins here in the spring but there's a perilous path downwards from the cliff top that I have never dared to descend.

Take a bracing walk along the beach and have a window seat in Hartleys Cafe, where you can get the local ice cream and a delicious array of home made cakes. You can also, if you are lucky, see porpoises and seals in the water at high tide. At low tide you can see the remains of the wreckage of the steamship Izaro that sank there in 1907.

Food scene

I love this place! Enormous portions of freshly made home made cakes and steaming pots of tea and aromatic coffee - what's not to love? The staff are great here too, they go out of their way to be helpful and have an extraordinary standard of customer service. A wholesome place to eat!

Use taxis or buses at night

Avoid using coastal trains at night time. Local people use them to get from one waterhole to another where real ales can be found. It's a fun thing to do but it can be quite overwhelming being amongst loose tongued locals at this time, especially if you are travelling with children or those of a nervous disposition.

Spectacular Sunsets

This area is noted for the colourful skies in the evening. This can be viewed from my home but you can immerse yourself in this experience by taking a short walk to the 'Colourful Coast' pathway where there are many seats along the way. Don't forget your camera!
