Dartmoor has miles of beautiful open moorland for walking and cycling with tumbling streams and rocky tors for scrambling up and climbing.
Traditional moorland inns offer good pub food and scrumptious Devon cream teas are served in the tearooms and cafes in villages on the moor.
Walking and Cycling on Dartmoor - Heathergate, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, is an ideal location for a walking and cycling break. Dartmoor offers miles of spectacular scenic open moorland, granite tors and tumbling streams, quiet villages and country inns for the walker or cyclist to explore.
Cycling and Walking Trails - Lydford is on the National Cycle Network Route 27. From Lydford to Okehampton Route 27, known as the Granite Way, passes along quiet country roads and from Tavistock to Plymouth the route is known as the Drake's Trail, a 21 mile traffic free cycling and walking route through lovely countryside taking in the iconic Gem Bridge.
The Tamar Trails which start from the Tamar Trails Centre at Gulworthy are a short drive away. The trails are open to cyclists, walkers and horseriders and meander through the Devon Great Consols and along the River Tamar through the Bedford and Russell Mines to Morwellham Quay. Bikes can be hired from the Tamar Trails Centre.
Lydford - Castles and Gorges - Heathergate is just outside Lydford, which was once a thriving medieval town with a mint and a castle, but is now a peaceful Devon village on the western slopes of Dartmoor. The remains of the Norman castle are still there to be explored.
A short walk from the village is the entrance to Lydford Gorge (National Trust), where the river Lyd drops in a series of dramatic falls, pools and pot holes into a deep chasm, aptly named the Devil's Cauldron, which then broadens into a pretty wooded valley. Near the far end of the gorge a small stream cascades down the White Lady waterfall into a deep pool. There are lovely walks through Lydford Gorge with refreshments available at each end.
