TINY studio apartment for ONE guest as the studio is TINY. There are 3 other apartments in the big old house, so at times you will be aware of other people through the wall or ceiling. Please read the entire listing for house/noise/neighborhood details. Half mile to downtown restaurants and culture, 2 miles to Notre Dame campus, 8 minutes to SB Airport and 80/90 Toll Road, 2 blocks to Memorial Hospital.

This TINY studio, located in an OLD house in an OLD neighborhood, is suitable for ONE guest as the studio is TINY. There are 3 other apartments in the house, so at times you will hear voices and movements from other apartments. The studio is pet-free. The space is completely NON-SMOKING inside and out.

STUDIO DETAILS: The main room contains one memory foam DOUBLE bed, a small pull-out table with chair, an easy chair with ottoman, and a closet with clothing rod and a few shelves. There is room under the bed to store a suitcase or other items. Along one wall is a tiny kitchenette with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink (intended for LIGHT cooking ---please refrain from excessively oily or strong-odor foods). The kitchen has basic dishes & cookware, microwave, standard coffeemaker, pour-over and French press coffee maker. City tap water is fine to drink, but a Brita pitcher is provided if you would like to filter it. Sheets are 100% cotton. Fragrance-free and non-toxic detergent used on bedding/towels. The studio is pet-free. No smoking anywhere on premises. Wireless internet provided. Recycling & composting available.

There is a smart TV with a Netflix account you can use or log out and use your own account. There is a separate tiny but complete bathroom with clawfoot tub with a shower (NOTE: The doorway to enter the bathroom is only about 6' high, so if you are a taller person, you will need to be careful not to bump your head). Sheets are 100% cotton. The studio is pet-free. No smoking inside or in yards. Recycling & outdoor compost bin available. Solar panels are installed on the metal roof, so some of the energy you use during your stay will be provided by the sun!

HOUSE NOISES: There are a total of 4 Airbnb apartments in the big old house. The walls/floors of the house are solid, but not sound-proof. Old floors will creak from guests above. You will be aware of guests in adjacent apartments, and they will be aware of you. Also, there is a cooling/heating compressor located outside the window. We don't consider it a disturbance, and only one guest has ever mentioned it, but we want you to be aware of it in case you are sensitive to this potential sound.

Laundry: If you need to do personal laundry, you are welcome to use the laundry room, which is shared with the other apartments in the house. Due to our allergies/asthma and environmental concerns, only non-toxic and fragrance-free products are permitted in the laundry room. We will provide an initial supply of acceptable laundry detergent.

Please be advised that our downtown neighborhood is OLD. Some houses are somewhat run-down; others are more cared for. Our block is fairly quiet, but the quiet is sometimes punctuated by urban sounds: music coming from cars, people socializing in the street, ambulance/fire truck sirens from the nearby hospital and fire station. Our neighborhood is multi-racial, multi-socio-economic, and multi-generational.

In terms of safety, we have lived on this block for over 30 years (many of them as a single woman) and have had very few issues. The apartment entrances are well-lit as are the parking areas. Our car has never been broken into, but we always take the precaution of locking the doors and removing any valuables. In our experience, walking to your destination is perfectly safe during the daytime. As for walking at night, we ourselves feel comfortable doing so, but visitors who aren't familiar with the area might be more comfortable driving or using a ridesharing service at night. That being said, the walking route from the Airbnb to downtown is getting better and better. The city has recently added pedestrian-friendly lighting to the streets, so most of the walking route to downtown is well-lit.

Although our block is old and time-worn, the neighbors, neighborhood association and the city are working to improve it. We ourselves are renovating two houses on the block, the city has torn down an abandoned house, and another neighbor has turned a vacant lot into a flower garden and installed a "Little Free Library." The neighborhood association and historic preservation group recently restored two other homes at the end of our block, and Habitat for Humanity recently built a new home on a previously vacant lot. During the growing season, we have our own little neighborhood farmers market a few blocks away. A great new restaurant , No.6, is just a block away. Lots of good things are happening!

If you look at our neighborhood on an online map (street view feature), you will not be able to see an accurate picture. The street view images of our block are at least 5 years old and do not reflect the improvements that have occurred in the last few years.

A block away, Just across Portage Ave/William Street, you will find the Chapin Park Historic District, which has brick streets and beautiful and colorful historic homes, and makes for a lovely stroll. Many downtown locations, including restaurants and entertainment, are .5 to one mile from the studio.. If you enjoy a longer walk, there is also a pleasant walking route to the campus of Notre Dame.

Our Airbnb studio apartments and sleeping rooms are located within a block of our home. We are located in a neighborhood adjacent to downtown South Bend, close to Memorial Hospital and Notre Dame.

We enjoy urban life, but also appreciate nature, bird-watching and solitude. We try to be environmentally conscious about what we eat, where we shop, how we live and how we work. We enjoy dancing, playing musical instruments, running, riding bikes, nature, yoga and our neighborhood's community cats :)
