COTTAGE HISTORY:
Built officially in 1900, although the foundation dates from the 1740s, this house is a piece of New Haven Quinnipiac river waterfront history. The New Haven oyster industry was a major enterprise in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and in the early years of the twentieth century. It is coming back!

Don and I discovered and fell in love with this waterfront community a few years ago. We became very involved in the neighborhood and have been working on different fronts with friends and neighbors to help restore the exposure it deserves. So when this little cottage came on the market in 2015, we decided to acquire it to help preserve this piece of New Haven history.

DESCRIPTION:
Single family house, fully equipped, with sheets, covers, towels, cookware, bathroom essentials, home-made French soaps. There are two bedrooms, kitchen, LR, private backyard, and parking for 2 cars. Enter through the second floor with an open floor plan from living-room to kitchen that flows through French doors to private stone patio; full bathroom with shower is also on the second floor. The main bedroom and a half bath are located on the third floor/loft (queen-size bed). The second bedroom is located on the first floor of the cottage (full-size bed). River views from living room and bedroom loft. Check out the pictures, steps are steep! The cottage is not recommended for young children and people with mobility issues.

Coffee and tea on the house, you can cook your own meals, or get a take out. Oven and dishwasher. The space is warmly decorated, has fresh linens and towels. Washer and dryer on site. Central AC, gas heat. WIFI. No TV, by design.

Relax in the cozy living room, lots of books available to you. There is a desk if you need to work. Iron table and iron available if you need to get ready for an interview or business meeting.

Watch the Oyster boats putter just yards from your front door. Walking distance to the Boat House Cafe breakfast lunch dinner place on the river (New BBQ, seafood, and vegetarian options).

Sit in the backyard and watch the birds in the tall trees. Walk down the street to look at historic houses, and watch the boats at the marina, rent a canoe or kayak to experience our beautiful river, check out the antique store across the street open on weekends, get a bottle of wine at classy Grand Vin across the historic Grand Avenue bridge.

NEW HAVEN:
New Haven has lots of restaurant to choose from, especially downtown. But diversity is also offered in our Fair Haven neighborhood. Along the busy and eclectic Grand avenue, you'd find bakeries, and small eateries, with delicious sandwiches, pastries, and hot meals, of Italian and Latin flavors. We'll share our favorite addresses with you.
Yale, Maps, biking options, kayak rentals, museums, parks: information provided at the cottage.

MANAGEMENT STYLE:
Ask questions, and we'll try to answer them. I just want you to enjoy your stay, whatever the reasons you have to come to town.

I will be your host and will get you oriented upon arrival, providing a peace of mind. We live a few houses down the street. Check out the profile and review pages for more information about my management style.

I like to greet my guests with a smile at their arrival and welcome them to the neighborhood and New Haven at large! I share information as needed, and answer questions. I give my guests privacy and they enjoy a safe stay and treat the house as if it were their own. They leave the place the way they found it, neat, and well organized.

NEIGHBORHOOD:
This is my neighborhood: a quieter location along the Q River, still in a busy town. YES, New Haven is a city: it means people live here, work here, and do interact with one another, but not necessarily in a way you are used to. Here, we just choose to celebrate our history and diversity. I host because I love New Haven and I want people to experience something that hotels and tourism offices downtown won't share with you! I like to greet my guests in person at arrival to establish trust and explain what's special about the house. This is not a luxury hotel in a gentrified neighborhood.

The Quinnipiac river historic neighborhood is one of the most overlooked neighborhoods of New Haven. Diversity of people and birds. City life with proximity to shops on Grand Avenue, and beautiful natural open spaces.
Our bridge is an "asymetrical steel swing bridge". This side of town next to the Q river, also called Fair Haven, is beautiful, rich in history, cultures, arts, family-friendly, community-oriented, and safe. Parks, restaurants, shops, schools.

On 212-bus - 2 miles or 10/15 minutes from downtown
Or use Uber - you'll be downtown in 5-10 minutes.
Or Rent a Bike 2 blocks up the street: https://www.bikenewhavenct.com/

OTHER:
This is an old house. Stairs to bedrooms are very steep. The cottage is not recommended for young children and people with mobility issues.

Sorry, no pets.

At the end of the stay, guests will dispose of their trash and recycling into city bins that are collected weekly; they will undo the bed and fold the sheets at the bottom of the beds; they shall wash all dishes, tidy up the entire space. Thermostat will be set conservatively. All doors will be locked.

The Quinnipiac River is a 45.5 miles (73.2 km) long, southward-flowing river. It rises in west central Connecticut from Dead Wood Swamp west of the city of New Britain. It flows roughly southward to Plainville, Southington, and Cheshire, west of the city of Meriden, through Wallingford and Yalesville, North Haven, and flows into New Haven Harbor, an inlet of Long Island Sound, east of downtown New Haven.

- Meet the diverse community, the most diverse neighborhood of New Haven.

I am Nathalie. I am French-American currently working as an End of life consultant/coach (aka Doula). Originally from Languedoc, France. I moved to this country 25 years ago for my work in biomedical research. My husband, Don, is a designer, a retired Yale professor and a Renaissance man. Together we are like bees, always busy building things bigger than ourselves. We enjoy traveling, our family, friends, and each other's company, good conversation, and pretty things, like guitars, trombones, dragonflies, birds, rivers and trees. We like music, books, listening to the birds, watching the sun rise and making a difference in our community. Neither of us like rude people but we will go out of our way for people we love and genuine people we don't really know. We host on Airbnb because we wish to share our love for the city of New Haven and for its Quinnipiac River history and waterfront.
