Le Parc is a collection of old farm buildings dating from the 1500s -1800s. It is set in 6 acres of private parkland. There's an outside terrace and dining area with views of Gourgé, and also an unheated salt-water plunge pool.

Le Parc is an ongoing renovation project that began in April 2022. Though far from being the finished article (this is reflected in the price) we are confident that we can offer guests a simple and comfortable stay in a location that we believe is special and unique.

The main house at Le Parc has been partially refreshed over the last three months, with some parts still unfinished but offering a good basic standard of accommodation. This is a project of multiple phases to be completed over a number of years, but it's exciting to see the difference that even three small months have made to the general mood and demeanour of the building.

The beds and mattresses are all comfortable and new. Most of the spaces have been freshly painted, and carefully collected items of furniture have been sourced. However, there are obvious pieces of furniture missing - but we'd rather invest in well-crafted vintage or antiques as opposed to filling the house with new, disposable items.

The bathrooms are dated and in need of refurbishment, but they are clean and functional.

Our biggest success has been the landscaping of the south-facing front of the house - home to a large gravel terrace and a roundabout planted with a sturdy and proud olive tree. This not only gives the house a stage to shine from but it acts as an extension of the stonework of the house itself - blurring the indoor and outdoor.

The plunge pool has been refurbished with mosaic tiles and a salt-water system. For next summer, we'll address the erratic paving we've inherited - but for now, it's the perfect spot to cool off on hot summer days. The pool is not heated - it's an even 1.45 m deep and never gets too cold.

Entrance Hall: A wooden plain but elegant staircase leads to the two upper floors. There's an antique bench seat for getting shoes on and off. The heavy, original, wooden front door that opens onto the gravel terrace can only be bolted from the inside.

Dining Room: Access to the house is from the door to the rear. There's an antique oak table with seating for eight. There's also a stunning Basque style sideboard and two casual armchairs. A window framed with grape vines opens onto the south-facing terrace to the front.

Downstairs Living Room: There are two deep three-seater sofas, a two seater and an armchair. The medieval walls are thick and keep the room cool in summer. There are windows on both sides.

Beyond the living room is an unrenovated part of the building that houses a laundry area with a new washing machine. There's a toilet at the very end that is best used to serve pool users.

Kitchen: Off the dining room is the original kitchen with feature fireplace and old clay tiles. The kitchen is largely unfitted and due an upgrade, but it's a clean bright space with new appliances - Smeg cooker, dishwasher, large fridge freezer and a decent espresso machine.

Bedroom 1: New king-size bed with new Eve mattress. Vintage chest of drawers. Small sofa and a table which can potentially be used as a work station. Large south-facing window looking over the terrace.
Ensuite with bath, shower, toilet and basin.

Bedroom 2: New king-size bed with new Eve mattress.
Ensuite with bath only, toilet and basin.

Upstairs Living Room: There's a large corner sofa, perfectly placed to enjoy movie nights on the 70 inch wall-mounted TV. We have Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple TV and a selection of French terrestrial channels.

Bedroom 3: Two single beds
Bedroom 4: New king-size bed with new Eve mattress.
Shared bathroom with shower, toliet and basin.

The plunge pool is 7 x 3.5m with a consistent depth of 1.45m. It's housed in an old ruin on the southwest end of the house. It's a salt-water system which is easier of the skin than chlorine. It's not heated, but nor is it too cold in summer.

The gravel terrace to the front of Le Parc has a large round table, 8 wooden chairs and views across the field and woods towards Gourge. There's a parasol that provides decent shade when the sun is strong.

There are 6 acres of grounds at Le Parc - some parts are mown and some are left wild for nature to do its thing. Bio-diversity is important to preserve and if you're lucky you'll spot a few local characters - deer, frogs and toads, lizards, Ragondin, a wide range of birds and even the occasional grass snake. Insects of all varieties can be a touch pesky, but remember that you're on their turf and they play an important role in the food chain.

There's a pond to the front of the property which is home to a vibrant community of frogs whose chorus can get quite animated during the mating season April - July. The pond is not deep, and care should be taken around it as families of nesting birds are often in residence.

There are loads of old oaks dotted around the property. To the rear you'll find the nicest examples, one of which has a picnic bench beneath it to enjoy the shade.

Gourgé, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Frankrike

Le Parc is just outside the pretty village of Gourgé which has a mini-supermarket for the daily essentials and a traditional French restaurant La Petite Marmite.

Nearby are the villages of Saint-Loup-Sur-Thouet and Airvault - both awarded Petite Cités de Caractère status.

The Medieval town of Parthenay is also 15 minutes drive away which has large supermarkets, shops and all other amenities.

Poitiers is the nearest major city which has an airport offering flights to the UK and hi-speed rail connections to Paris and Bordeaux.
