HOUSE HISTORY:

The Bartman was originally designed and built (By Gustave Bartman for himself and his wife - Mina) as a duplex (somewhat rare for 1892) and you will have the entire two bedroom apartment on the first floor with a claw foot tub bathroom and fully equipped kitchen as well as the parlor (Victorian for living room) all to yourselves.

Excerpted from the National Historic Registry documents:
"The Gustave Bartman House, constructed in 1892, is locally significant under criterion C as a well-preserved example of the Queen Anne style of architecture as expressed in a modest vernacular building. Designed during the Victorian period, the building incorporates features of both the Queen Anne and Stick styles. The building is also significant as the earliest example of a multifamily dwelling, in the case a duplex, in the study area. The date of construction is based on city directories and confirmed by deed records. Gustave Bartman, a contractor by trade, may have built the house. It was constructed one year after the City of East Portland was incorporated by the City of Portland. The house is one of only a few remaining Victorian-era residences in the portion of the Hosford-Abemethy neighborhood which is under study."
You can research the property and historic information easily on wiki: just search for The Gustave Bartman House".

The "Salon" is beautifully furnished with gorgeous vintage lighting; a wonderful remote controlled gas fired wood stove; and a full entertainment system with a flat screen HD TV complete with surround sound system and plug ins for laptops and iPods for music. So if it's a cozy evening relaxing by the fire with some music or a movie you might be interested in everything is there ready for your enjoyment.

Gjestetilgang
As mentioned above you will have the main floor and private/separate apartment entirely to yourself. In classic Queen Anne style there is the original main front door that enters into the "Vestibule" (Victorian for "front hall"). Your apartment is on the main floor with its own additional entrance (as well as a back door to your own, small porch). Upstairs is the second separate apartment - the first floor is all yours during your stay but the upstairs is reserved.

Andre ting det er verdt å merke seg
The Gustave Bartman House is almost all original, having been saved from the travesty of the dreaded remodel which has often led to the loss of much of the American home's original character. I have restored the original double hung windows throughout the house and you will love the functionality and feel of such historic elements in a house like this (the reflections of the sun shining through a 125 year old pane of glass is quite beautiful).
I'm sure you will see upon arriving that the incredible charm of the Gustave Bartman House comes not from faux granite countertops or plastic chrome kitchen fixtures but instead from its essential authenticity, which is reflected in many details throughout the house and indeed even felt when handling doors and windows and hardware all crafted over a hundred and twenty years ago.

The Bartman is located in the heart of SE Portland on a beautiful tree lined street surrounded by wonderful houses and apartments. SE 12th Ave is a busy street to be sure, but parking is free and I have never had trouble finding a spot very close. In the evenings and on weekends it is very open - there are generally spots available pretty much right in front of the house.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions about the house or location.

The Bartman is located minutes from downtown in the heart of what we in Portland call "Inner South East" on the main avenue connecting with the hub of SE Hawthorne and 12th. The neighborhood of Hosford-Abernathy is one of Portland's most beloved neighborhoods.
This is a wonderfully active urban (in the Portland sense) area (SE 12th avenue is a busy inner residential street): you'll be amused to watch one of the many 'pedalounges' cruising by with revelers aboard. Within two blocks are two of the best of the many fantastic restaurants at your finger tips: (Junior's cafe for incredible breakfasts and Teote for amazing Latin American food and both with excellent atmosphere) and all around the neighborhood with an easy walk your choices for excellent dining are practically unlimited.
You can experience the pulse of the neighborhood from the comfort of the beautiful parlor while relaxing by the fire. I want to be sure to let you know that 12th avenue is a main residential avenue and as such there is traffic noise that diminishes at night. Staying here at The Bartman is an authentic historic Portland urban experience which is part of the pleasure and excitement of living in one of Portland's most vibrant and beloved neighborhoods.

Hi! I'm Stephen I am a life long avid sailor who grew up sailing and racing on the Great Lakes. At 12 years old I had the great good fortune of getting aboard a famous old 1938 racing sailboat: the 12 meter US 14 "The Northern Light", and pretty much spent my summers aboard cruising and racing all around the lakes. I love being on the water and under sail... After having had a blast working for years in film and television as a "Props guy" I am getting back to a deeper passion: teaching sailing again. (I am a USCG Licensed Captain and an American Sailing Association Certified Instructor). You can find me most evenings (or join me if you wish! Be sure to check out Agwe' Sailing on line) out sailing my vintage 1978 sailboat in the most amazing summer breezes on the mighty Columbia river... Wanna go for a sunset sail?! I also lived in Germany for many years (my family is from a small village there) those were incredible times... ask me about Berlin in the early 90's... I went to school at the University of Oregon and from there found my way to Alaska and before I knew it I was a commercial fisherman for some years and worked throughout the waters of Alaska - experiences I will treasure all my life. (Umm, after my first very successful season fishing I never really went back to school... I think I'm still owing some fantastic professors a few papers on European intellectual history...) I fell head over heals in love with Portland in the 80's when my travels and education brought me to this part of the world. I settled here year round in the mid 90's feeling still as I do today that Portland is an absolutely wonderful "town". I've owned and managed rental property here in Portland for years now and have really enjoyed it. I am so looking forward to creating great experiences serving and helping my future guests have a great stay here at the Historic Gustave Bartman House!
