Relax and rejuvenate at Eagle Hill, an all-season rural retreat with sweeping views over Mudgee's Riverlea Valley. Offering 25 acres to explore nature trails and hikes, a picnic-perfect dam, and an abundance of Australian wildlife, you’ll feel a world away but just a 15-minute drive through beautiful vineyards to Mudgee CBD. The well-appointed house leads out to a generous entertaining deck with alfresco dining, a BBQ, spa, seasonal orchard, and fire pit, all overlooking panoramic vistas.

Eagle Hill is set on 25 acres on top of the highest hill in the middle of the Riverlea Valley. This delightful, humble country house has been furnished for comfort and entertaining, sleeping eight guests with an option to request an additional sofa bed to be made up.

In the main house, an open plan living area is set around a combustion fireplace, supported by a reverse cycle heating and cooling unit. The lounge area overlooks the rolling hills, while a wall-mounted TV caters to your entertaining needs.

Pick an assortment of fruit from the trees surrounding the property and bake a delicious pie in the fully-equipped kitchen. You’ll have everything you need to cook at home including a SMEG refrigerator and freezer, convection cooktop, a coffee machine, toaster, kettle, slow cooker, jaffle maker, popcorn machine, dishwasher and all the essential utensils, crockery and cookware. Water is filtered through the tap and the kitchen window offers the perfect vantage point to check out the herd of neighbouring goats that come around the mountain most days.

The six-seater oak dining table extends, seating up to ten guests. Store your bottles of Mudgee wine in the hutch behind the table or break out some puzzles and board games for family game night.

Through the living area, make your way out to the spacious deck with a ten-seater table where you can watch spectacular low fog golden sunrises and spectacular sunsets. Light up the gas BBQ or switch on the outdoor heater and gather around the fire pit as you look up at the Milky Way streaks across the valley.

Take a perimeter walk of the property and explore the picnic-perfect dam fed by a natural spring that runs down Eagle Hill or wander over the ridges beside the house and discover “Kangaroo Corner”.

There are three bedrooms in the main house. Soak in views of Riverlea Valley from the main bedroom with a queen bed, built-in wardrobe and a reverse cycle heating and cooling unit. The views continue on to the second bedroom with a queen bed, built-in wardrobe and standing heater; while the third bedroom has king single bunks, portable heater, a chest of drawers and looks out into the garden of famous Mudgee roses grafted from the old train station.

The main bathroom is pristine with a glass shower, vanity, toilet and hair dryer, as well as complimentary consumables to get you through your stay. In-unit laundry is available within the main house, featuring a washer, plus other items to enjoy around the property such as a picnic basket, blankets and outdoor games.

A self-contained studio can be found four metres from the property along the deck. It offers a queen bed and double sofa bed, plus plenty of storage and a bar heater to keep you warm in the cooler months. A second bathroom is available for guest use with a toilet and shower, plus a mini-fridge, kettle and toaster add to your holiday convenience.

No stay is complete without at least one walk up Eagle Hill to take in the spectacular views. For an easy walk, head to the back paddock gate and follow the fence-line up the hill on the right to the fallen-tree bench at the top. For the more adventurous, head through the gate and up Eagle Hill for views from the highway in the distance to the right and Windemere Dam wall to the left.

Mudgee is VERY social and the locals are warm and welcoming. Every weekend there are events, markets and vineyard experiences. You’ll be right round the corner from some of the region’s best wineries – renowned Logan cellar door overlooks Eagle Hill – order a cheese platter as see if you can work out which one it is.

Try and organise a wine tour (e.g. Mudgee Wine Tours). Logan, Skimstone, First Ridge, Burrundulla and Moothi Estate are all on the way to town and a great start to the day. A few of our other faves to visit, north east of town are: di Lusso (stop here for Lunch, they have a pizza oven, Italian varietals, and bocce by the lake), Pieter van Gent (the pink port poured over ice with a squeeze of lime is special), Huntington Estate, Peterson’s, Bunnamagoo, Yeates, Robert Oatley. Two of the best ones - Lowe & Robert Stein - have beautiful restaurants as well.

The Warrakirri Dining Experience is an unforgettable Aboriginal fine dining degustation with Sharon Winsor - book ahead for this "must do". Her café IndigiEarth is well worth a visit for breakky or lunch too.

Book yourself in for lunch or dinner at The Zin House after a tasting at Lowe vineyard. Chef Kim Curry is renowned in the Central West, as is biodynamic winemaker David Lowe. An afternoon at Lowe, borrowing a picnic rug and pillows, then taking in their nature walk past the donkeys and “beach”, is a beautiful prelude to dinner at The Zin House.

Try a degustation lunch with matching wines at Pipeclay Pumphouse at Robert Stein winery and make sure you get there a bit early and visit the cellar door (fantastic wines) and their vintage motorbike museum.

Three Tails Brewery and Smokehouse is new in town, does American style slow BBQ and sides, and has a fantastic vibe.

For brekky there are endless bustling cafes to choose from in Mudgee town - go for a stroll and see who can fit you in.

For a drink in town Roth’s is a local fave. There’s also Elton’s, and all the pubs are awesome and each a little different. The Lawson is more of a family pub, the balcony at Kelly’s Irish pub is a bit young n fun and a beautiful spot to watch the sun go down, and the Oriental is a good all-rounder – a bit glam after the recent reno. Kelly's and The Courthouse are great for a dance - but there's live music at most of the pubs. For families The Orient has a kids room and Kelly’s has a playground out the back.

If you eat or drink at Kelly's the courtesy bus will bring you back to the Riverlea Valley. Alternatively catch a cab for around $50.

Loads of great shopping – Church and Market streets are worth a stroll but don’t miss the hidden gems on backstreets like Loft on Lewis Street with delightful garden café out the back.

If you still want more nature after exploring Eagle Hill, go for a bushwalk to The Drip on Ulan Road, or Ferntree Gully.

If you feel like a scenic drive head out to Gulgong – it’s a town frozen in time and used to be on the old $10 note.

To see Mudgee by air there's hot air ballooning or scenic helicopter flights.

Plenty of fishing, golfing, kayaking, boating locally too.

If you’re driving back to Sydney you can stop at gorgeous Rylestone (more great shopping) on your way home and have the famous dumplings at 29Nine99

On the property, fly a kite (kept in the carport), kick a ball, skim stones on the dam (a few hundred metres from the house), go wildlife watching, pick blackberries, do a puzzle (100-2000 pieces to choose from) play a game, read a book.... there's a lot for kids to do at Eagle Hill.

Further out in Mudgee there are loads of parks, playgrounds, a skate park, and cycling tracks to enjoy. Our kids go wild for Mudgee Pool’s water park – also with the best Korean Fried Chicken you’ll find in the Central West.

Some great excursions include Mudgee Farm Walk Tours (a few times a month to explore local working farms), gold panning in Gulgong, learning about bees at Honey Haven, taking in the skies at Mudgee Observatory, riding a train at Mudgee Miniature Railway, bird watching at Putta Bucca Wetlands, or having a bounce at Bizee Bodz.

Mountain bike at Mudgee Common, cast a fishing line at Windamere Dam, kayak or canoe at Ganguddy, and there are a few local centres that offer horse riding.

For those working remotely, Hubspace in town is a great shared office space with all the amenities - rent a desk for $30 a day.
