Enjoy a carefree stay in our private, one of a kind reconditioned barn. Four by four ebony stained beams, the original push out freshly reglazed casement windows allow light in from all directions and the best sunsets ever, travertine tile, cherry live edge slabs everywhere, a custom kitchen w/ island seating for four, an entire second floor master suite with tub for two, a glass shower with view all wrapped in warm cedar ceilings invite you to settle and relax into the northern door peninsula.

Our reconditioned barn offers lodging for four comfortably and five if there is a little one. It has one king bed on the second floor and a full size sofa sleeper on the first floor. This is a two story structure with an open kitchen living room design with bathroom adjacent. A custom built oak staircase welcomes you to the second floor where you will find the master bedroom and second living room with a whirlpool tub for two and second vanity sink. Lots of space for personal belongings, a dresser and small hanging space.

There is a custom kitchen with soapstone countertops and finely crafted oak cabinetry, open shelving for the stoneware and glassware at your fine tips. The vintage Viking stove, cookware and utensils, large prep space, many small appliances, stocked spices make it simple to dine in. You can be inspired to prepare food at home, enjoy the open meadow with fire pit and charming stone patio with outdoor seating. There is a cherry island bar with four cushy stools, a slender teak table that seats four for sit down. A stand up workstation cabinet and a window seat round out the kitchen.

The first floor bathroom has a tiled glass shower with a Door County rock floor and a sweet west facing window making it heavenly to shower before dinner. The vanity sink situated in front of the open north facing casement window makes it enjoyable to brush your teeth in any season.

The entire second floor 28x 22 is a king loft bedroom with a sunken bathtub for two. There is a very comfy sofa w/chaise situated under the south facing dormer creating an extra nice place to sink in and relax. The upstairs also has an extra vanity sink, places for your personal things and loads of space to stretch out.

The original barn structure came from Whitefish Bay Dunes State Park. Meticulously dissembled piece by piece by the original owner and then ambitiously reassembled and enhanced making the cottage barn refuge a gem.

Please Note :

PARTIES -We do not allow parties or gatherings at the barn with unregistered guests. If you want to inquire about a gathering please contact Kathleen by phone directly.

AIR CONDITIONING - We do not have central air in the barn as the average high temperature in for June July and August are in the 70's day and 50's and 60's at night .

We love animals and are always excited to have them as guests. We have two cats, Tulip and Truffle, and a Border Collie named Blue who is very friendly and loves to play stick.

We have been hosting dogs for a long time and have learned the following guidelines work best for our rentals. Please respect these rules so we can keep hosting animals.

-Dogs are not automatically approved, please introduce you pet to us in your inquiry-

1. Dogs must be completely house trained, no exceptions
2. If dogs are off leash they must be well behaved when sharing outdoor space. If you know your dog can get territorial or aggressive he/she should not be off lease on the property. If your dog chases or is aggressive to cats they should not be off leash on our property.
3. Dogs barking or growling continuously while owners are home or away are not ready to be our guests.
4. Dogs are not allowed on furniture. We know this is hard to manage on vacation when you want to snuggle with your dog. So if you know you may not be able to enforce that rule please bring your own blankets to throw over the furniture.
***We don't expect or have the time to clean animal hair off the furniture, it is very time consuming and this task is not included in the cleaning fee. So please remove all dog hair yourself with the vacuum and lint brushes (under the sink) we provide.
5. Dogs that chew on furniture, rugs etc., are not allowed. . All damages will be paid for at pet owners expense.
6. Maximum two dogs unless otherwise approved.
7. Please deposit all poop bags to the main garbage receptacle next to the green pole barn.

Sister Bay, Wisconsin, USA

We live near the intersection of Hill Road and County ZZ in Sister Bay. It is an 2.5 miles drive down Hill road to the center of the Sister Bay village and the bay shore/ sister bay beach. To the east of our home about 3/4 mile is the lake shore with easy access to Sand Bay beach where we often enjoy a private morning swim with the sunrise. Also, a few miles further north is Rowley's Bay which is a great boat launch for small crafts.

If you are driving north on 57 ( the lake side option instead of HWY 42 the bay side option) you turn right on Old Stage Road before you reach Sister Bay. This road bisects the northern peninsula between Sister Bay and Ellison Bay and takes you to the intersection of Hill Road and Old Stage where you take a right to get to our property. (You can also take a right on HWY ZZ and take that around to Hill road where you take a left and we are the second driveway.)

Tim's parents purchased a modest lakefront vacation home on Door Bluff Road in 1969 when he was nine and the second oldest of six. His mother Inger had arrived in the US from Sweden ten years earlier and found this idyllic Swedish connection thriving on the northern door peninsula ! Tim's dad deepened the family roots when he acquired a small 36 ' sailboat so the whole crew could recreate on the summer waters of Lake Michigan. I was first invited to join Tim and his family eight years later on one of their vacations when I was 17 and we were newly sweet-hearted . Now 40 years later after thousands of all weather hikes on Hotz trail, hundreds of good beach days at Newport and countless cold water life changing swims, we have the honor of caring for a few special vacation homes in Northern Door including our own. No matter where we lived throughout our life, or how life was unfolding, neither of us have ever missed a summer vacation in the gentle woods of northern door. We honor and are protective of the delicate escarpment land, we respect the long time year round family residents who have kept the peninsula alive in the winter and we admire the hard working perennial business owners that make door county so naturally welcoming . We relish our days in northern door, enjoying the lingering springs, cooler restorative summer weather and inspiring magnificent fall colors. Being close to such a rare clean fresh body of water we consider a luxury. We feel blessed to have been supported by our families, friends and community throughout life's progression. Now to be able to recreate our own door county home haven experience to share with our loved one and an expanded community is a privilege. We live six months of the year in our sweet meadow home on Hill Road in Sister Bay.

Our MadisonWI Profile

We became the second owners of the Chamberlain house in 1991, caring for this now 100 year old house in the heart of Madison's historic district has been an experience of on going culture building for our family over the decades.... After being relatively light on our feet for nearly a decade after college, we returned to our home town married with two babies girls needing a nest. We knew we wanted to live near the grandparents and began our search!

The Chamberlain house was listed for just one day in the newspaper and somehow I managed to persuade the owner over the phone to let me walk through. He had pulled the ad because he realized the house was not ready to show. It had become a rental property over the years with little to no maintenance, suffice it to say the house had lost its sparkle. I specifically remember my mother in law at the time saying after her tour, “I would not touch it with a ten foot pole.”

From the street, the aging dark brown paint job, the falling off gutters and gapping whole under the front porch stood out like a sore thumb in this tidy historic residential neighborhood. I was drawn in by the rustic street appeal, sitting there weathered on this sweet little raise in the land, this 80 years old house charmed me and called out for care.

Right off the bat, upon entering the screened porch, childhood memories of cloud watching for hours and day dreaming on the couch of my Gram's front porch in the UP were revived...... when we pushed open the solid oak front door we were met with waves of cat pee emanating from the gold shag carpet which shook me right out of my daydream. i imagined with ease that beneath the old soiled covering (which I immediately wanted to begin tearing out) was a protected hardwood floor. The smell was strong and begged to distract us from the rich patinated wood and leaded glass built-ins. The fact that there was no light shining through the windows didn’t help. I took the liberty of moving aside the sagging Mexican blanket covering the morning sun from streaming through the prominent east facing picture window. The sunshine lit the room up and as we walked through each room I was able to imagine it in its original splendor. The quality of the craftsmanship inspired me, some focused skilled crew built it back in 1915 for $4000.00. I began envisioning our family living under this roof.........twenty nine years later, several dozen home repair projects completed (including even before we moved in a complete rewiring of the entire electric system of the house) it became a home base to our three amazing daughters, a fervent partnership, four beloved border collies, many regal cats, ancient friendships, countless family gatherings, and thousands of shared delicious meals. Today we continue the tradition of deepening our home base and culture by welcoming in folks from all walks of life and from all parts of the world.

Under oppholdet ditt

In the winter we are usually in Madison so guests will be given a code for the lock box in order to retrieve the keys. In the summer we will leave the door open for your arrival and keys inside.

We encourage you to arrive at your convenience and leisure, always feel free to text or call with your e.t.a. if you need directions or have questions etc...We do appreciate knowing an estimated arrival time especially if it is going to be after dark, we can leave the lights on for you.

We are often not available to greet our guests so please just make yourself at home. The Cottage Barn is the gray building on your right when you drive in. It is across from a large green pole barn.

We realize many people have driven hours to travel to northern door and want to unpack and get settled in. We understand travel schedules often change, this is never a problem for us so please do not feel any pressure on our end. There is lots to explore on the way up so go with your flow.

We are easy going and want our guests to feel at home on the property from start to finish. We have three other buildings on our property, a small cordwood eco cabin we built with our oldest daughter Grace, it was her 12 credit sustainable design project for college, we call the Sleeping House and it is for friends and family. Our main house has a rental too, we call the Meadow Sweet Retreat and lodges 4 (up to 6 guests) if requested.

Feel free to come and knock on the second door of the house ( farthest from the driveway) if you are looking for me !
