Nærområdet

Palm Beach, New South Wales, Australia

Crane Lodge is a hidden sanctuary nestled into the top of the peninsula between Palm and Whale Beach, 40km and just over an hour from the Sydney CBD. Palm Beach is home to jet-setters, wheeler dealers, and families who've lived and loved in the area for generations.

Palm Beach or "Palmy" is also well known in Australia and in the UK for being the real life ‘Summer Bay’ – Australia’s long-running "soapie" - but it's actually a long curving crescent beach with a wind-protected ocean pool on the rocks at the southern end perfect for the kids, and to the north boasts a surf beach under a magnificent headland adorned with a famous lighthouse built in the 1880's. The trail up is a decent hike well worth it for the fantastic views across Broken Bay to the Central Coast to the north, and Lion Island and Ku'ring-gai Chase National Park to the west, and migrating humpback whales can oft be spotted in winter, before descending downhill again towards the Boathouse cafe for a lunch.

"Pittwater" is a large tributary of the Hawkesbury River which flows out north of the headland to meet the Pacific Ocean, and is a yachtie's paradise. With multiple bays of homes only accessible by boat, a waterfall and many dreamy lagoons on the Ku'ring-gai side, it's a wonderful place to explore by kayak, paddleboard, or a tinny from the Boathouse's kiosk.

On the driveable side of Pittwater, there are some seriously glam spots for dining - the Newport Arms owned by the Merivale group is a multiple bar and restaurant complex overlooking the southern end, is perfect for a sundowner, or a fabulous meal at Bert's Brasserie. Barrenjoey House at the north end of Pittwater is a wonderful spot for relaxed dining year-round overlooking a peach-toned sunset.

Picturesque beaches at Clareville, Paradise and Snapperman, offer spots for a stroll or swim away from the stronger waves of the Pacific Ocean, and Whale Beach with its rust-coloured squeaky sand is a popular spot for barefoot weddings.

Palm Beach's historic ferry wharf has a variety of ferries from historic to modern who will whisk you across the water to Ettalong on the Central Coast, Patonga for a stroll and meal at the waterfront pub, and a scenic loop ferry around Pittwater.

Further afield from the wharf if you have your own boat, or rent ours, some spectacular boat-access only bays in the Ku'ring-gai Chase National Park can be explored, including the stunning America's Bay, home to a cascading freshwater waterfall you can stand underneath on a beach. Superb.

Back on land, Bangalley Headland has a superb 45-minute loop walk that will help to burn off dinner the night before, with the trailhead only 15 mins walking distance from Crane Lodge, and has outstanding flora endemic to the Pittwater spotted gum forest of the area, of which Crane Lodge also resides on a remnant pocket of, which we've meticulously restored with sub-canopy species.

When it's time to return to Crane Lodge, our inclinator lift will whisk you from street level past our forest bathing nature walk, available for those who wish to take their time ascending up to the house at the top of the hill.

Protected from the Pacific Ocean to the north by high rock walls that embrace the rear garden, entertaining areas and swimming pool, there are spectacular views out to Avalon Beach, Bangalley Head and Pittwater to soak in and contemplate when your return visit will be.

I own and manage the award-winning boutique luxury retreat in Sydney, Australia, called Calabash Bay Lodge.
My husband Derek whom I travel with (most of the time - when he's not travelling elsewhere himself for work) is a chief creative officer of a leading international design agency in the inflight, media and entertainment space. Trained as a designer and fine artist, Derek hails originally from New Zealand, hence we have set up our Lodge with reference to the style and tradition of NZ's finest lodges.
Our favourite travel destinations tend to be on water or islands wherever we can find them, Croatia, Iceland, Italy's Aeolian Islands as well as Sardinia, and Sicily are particular faves, and our own native Australia and New Zealand of course. We also love Bologna, Berlin, Copenhagen, Madrid, Hong Kong, and New York.
Being in the travel industry professionally, and used to hosting and welcoming guests myself, I can assure you that I will treat your home with the utmost of respect and care for it as if it were my own.
