A modern apartment converted in 2020 from the attic of 1888 school with a bedroom (sleeps 2), ‘hems’ bedroom (sleeps 2 on mattresses on lattoflex) and in a spacious lounge/dining room 2 more beds, flatscreen TV (Netflix & Chromecast) and wifi. There's also a dining room table & chairs, a modern kitchen and a great bathroom & shower. Its biggest asset: a big terrace with great views. Free electricity, water & on-site parking, a bicycle shed near the pétanque court. See website: bornholmbnb.com

Stedet
At our nearest beach at Arnager (about 1 km) your kids can splash in shallow water and those that prefer deeper water can take a dive from the harbour wall. And after a full day at the beach, the whole family can enjoy lunch or dinner at our local Arnager Rogeri (it’s about 750 m away) enjoying island-style foods and of course, smoked fish! Rønne is a bicycle ride away, about 6 km (and there will be no parking or traffic problems!)

Apart from the cycle path that runs right at our property entrance (we have 4 bicycles for hire) offering numerous cycle roads and forest paths all over the island, there is also a coastal hiking path (see the video) that winds along the beaches - look at the swans! Rønne is only 6 km away, with its boutiques, museums, art & crafts, pubs and café’s, restaurants, art galleries, swimming pool, supermarkets, buses and a local ferry trip of 50 minutes duration to the island of Christiansø.

Our 18-holes golf course is only about 5 km away, an easy bicycle trip of 15 mins. And for anglers, there is, of course, the sea and our dams are well stocked with pike and trout, in fact, the nearest angling spot is only 750 metres away.

If it’s our famous white beaches you’re looking for you are on the right side of the island as we are close to Stampen, Onsbaek (both close to us) and Arnager (all easy cycling distances). From Arnager, it is sandy beaches all the way, first the lesser-known and delightful Boderne, then on to the beaches at Duedde (5 km long beach) and Snoggebaek.

Beliggenhet

Rønne, Danmark

Bornholm is just so hot right now!

Everyone's talking about this cute little Baltic island of culinary wonders and laid-back island living. We are less than 1 km from the sea on the island of Bornholm, known throughout Scandinavian countries as ‘The Sunshine Isle”, and for good reasons too as Bornholm has on average more sunshine hours than any other place in Denmark.

We are located within walking or cycling distance of the Arnager beach (about 1 km) and 6 km from Rønne (with its shopping possibilities, museums, restaurants and pubs). Our 18-holes golf course is only about 5 km away, an easy bicycle trip of 15 mins. And for anglers there is of course the sea, right around our small island, our dams are well stocked with pike and trout, in fact the nearest angling spot is only 750 metres away. As the island is so small it’s strange to mention ‘local’ attractions, they’re actually all ‘local’, (see our website: bornholmbnb.com and the excellent local site: bornholm.info for more details and examples), but apart from the beaches, the rogeri at Arnager, the forest cycling, hiking and coastal walks, we live close to the famous Rundkirke (Round Church) at Nylars and there are many arts & crafts studios to visit where you can see the artists working doing pottery, glass blowing, painting .

• A gastronomic journey on Bornholm
The experience of enjoying a meal can be multifaceted and on the island you can enjoy the highest level of gastronomy as well as the simplicity of a freshly smoked herring. You will also taste the best water ever! Our tap water is so pure that it won the ‘Vand Grand Prix 2019’ award last year, for the best tasting water in Denmark.

In recent years the increased emphasis on chefs using quality local products has brought attention to Bornholm several times. There are several examples: from the award-wining dairy farms at Klemensker (won 2 world championships in cheese). Or the baker in Aakirkeby that has been baking its famous ‘kiks’ (rye crackers) since 1924. Bornholm has many culinary specialties, ranging from rapeseed and poultry to its famous rogeris (smoke houses), locally brewed craft beer, liquorice sweets

According to the Bornholm Info website: “It’s been more than 15 years now, since the first Bornholm food producers brought the small island of Bornholm to the world’s knowledge. Beer, pasta, licorice and other tasty foods were among them. The Bornholm food industry has grown so big, that it is placed on position four over the most important sources of income for the island by now. The products are well-known for their high quality and can be bought in super markets all over the country of Denmark – and even abroad. You can also visit the cosy and authentic farm shops on the island, in the newly opened Market Hall Torvehal Bornholm in Rønne – or even order the products via the producers’ websites. Food bloggers, journalists as well as food reviewers from all over the world have written articles about the new gastronomic age, that has begun on the small island far out in the Baltic Sea.”

Part of the charm of this island’s gourmet food scene is the fact that it is small, so everyone knows the names of the people who have milked the cows, what field the cows have been grazing on and they know that everything is made with care and consideration for tradition, quality, taste and sustainability.

If you want fresh air and to experience the unique natural surroundings, rent a bicycle and take "The Food Route" that will lead you past a fine selection of food producers around Bornholm.

• The Bornholm classics
Bornholm is known for several sights and attractions. Hammershus, Northern Europe's largest medieval castle ruin at Hammerknude, Paradisbakkerne with the 35-ton stone called Rocking Stone, Bornholm's highest point Rytterknægten, and the Ekkodalen - the stone formations between Hasle and Hammershus, Jons Kape and Helligdomsklipperne. Our personal favourites are Bornholm’s four unique round, white-washed churches in Østerlars, Olsker, Nylars and Nykers, that were also fortresses. The upstairs sections were designed as shooting galleries to fight raiders. Staggering to think that these beautiful structures are still so well preserved after nearly 900 years!

• Arts & Crafts
Bornholm has developed into a centre for arts and crafts, and in 2017 – as the first place in Europe – Bornholm was appointed as ‘World Craft Region’. Since 2002, more than 60 of the most skilled professional arts and craftsmen have joined ACAB – Arts & Crafts Association Bornholm. ACAB is a censored association, where an external assessment committee approves each craftsman before admission. When you arrive to the island, it is almost impossible not to run into an artist or a craftsman. Goldsmiths, sculptors in wood, textile, glass and jewellery artists and glassblowers, potters and designers. The island has for many years attracted a lot of different creative souls, and most of them want to share their creative urge and invite you inside for an experience. There are open workshops where you can indulge in art and there are galleries and exhibitions, attractions and museums where you can look at it. The artistic inspiration comes from the island's incredible light, the nature on the island, as well as the good clay found on the island. These are some of the reasons why the island is full of creativity.

We have an excellent site on the island that covers every possible interesting site you may want to visit: bornholm.info

Diedrik & Sofie are a Belgian couple who moved to Bornholm last year. In fact, in Sofie’s case, it was a ‘return to her roots’-story as her father’s family are from the island and she spent many happy holidays visiting her Mogensen family here as a child. Diederik, originally from South Africa, and a wine educator, was interested when he read that Burgundy’s name was originally Burgundarholmr (in Old Norse Bornholm was called Burgundarholmr which means: "Island of the Burgundians"). In the 4th century, they left the island and gradually migrated south through Germanic lands into Roman Gaul and settled in the western part of the Alps and Rhône valley, establishing the kingdom of the Burgundians and wine culture that has delighted u since. Sofie speaks Danish (but as can be expected if you have only lived here for about 6 months it is not yet 100%. She speaks Dutch fluently as well as English and some French. Diedrik speaks English, Afrikaans, Dutch and a bit of Deutsch. Sofie is a qualified chef and baker and will provide a Continental breakfast in a basket for those ordering it in advance (see later for details). Now, when you arrive you won’t find a rose on your pillow, but you will find fresh milk in the fridge and coffee, tea and sugar, with our compliments.
