The house was bought by our family in the ‘60s, rebuilt & furnished for our use as a holiday home, retaining many of its original characteristics: local granite stone around the fireplace, steeped oak ceiling in the upstairs (original) sitting room w/ 2 alcoves, & the oak crossbeams in the living/dining room. In the back garden the swimming pool lies beside the original threshing area, which provides a pleasant place to relax, as does the area outside the kitchen door, which has a fixed BBQ.

Braga, Portugal

The whole of the Portuguese "Green Coast" boasts beautifully unspoiled, long beaches, many leading on to the next.
You can walk from Ofir to Apulia, where in olden days men wore togas to collect seaweed for sale, as practised by their ancestors, the ancient Romans who settled in this area.
The local stone is granite, used in construction and which can be appreciated in the historical towns of Barcelos, Braga, Ponte da Barca, Viana de Castelo and Ponte de Lima which has a lovely granite bridge.
The wines of this fertile region are many and delicious; the Port wine cellars are worth a visit to Vila Nova de Gaia on the south bank of the river Douro in Porto.

The climate is hot in summer, but pleasantly warm in spring and autumn. The short winter is generally chillier and with much needed rain.

The local area offers a wide choice of interesting things to see and do; from sporting activities, visits to cultural and historical places, walking and hill-climbing to simply relaxing and soaking up the peace and beauty. The people of this region are well-known for being very welcoming, friendly, and hard-working, which you will see for yourself. The internationally-known Estela golf course is 15 minutes’ drive, and there is windsurfing at Vila da Conde, 20 minutes away.
If you cycle, why not try the Santiago Pilgrims’ Way, which used to pass through Barca, and which is still marked by the conch shell of St James.

In Valença do Minho, on the Spanish border, you can eat well at the pleasant inn.
Nearer to home, in Fão, try traditional food in Rita Franqueira’s restaurant or grilled chicken in Martins. In Apulia the more expensive Azeite e Alho has excellent food.
In Ofir and Esposende there are bars and discos, and a Casino in Povoa de Varzim.

An absolute ‘must’ is to visit the traditional day-long market in Barcelos, 12 kms away. Held every Thursday and selling excellent quality clothes and household linens, goods and furniture, local handicrafts, fruit and vegetables, some animals and rural equipment, it is colourful and unique! You will definitely find something to buy!

All villages celebrate their own saint’s day, and Barca do Lago’s ‘Festa’ is held over the first weekend of August culminating on the Sunday. Legend has it that fisherman found in their nets a beautiful small statue of Our Lady of Barca. Nowadays it graces the charming little chapel beside the river. A procession of decorated boats, one carrying the statue, moves along the river towards the chapel where it is then blessed. This is followed by music, dancing, fireworks.
On the 15th of August the famous Feast of the Agony (Festa da Agonia) is held in Viana de Castelo, 40 kms north, with traditional Minho dancing, fireworks and much more!

Bicycles and canoes belonging to the house are available for guest use.
