Beliggenhet

Cheviot, Canterbury, New Zealand

Cheviot is a small friendly town that occupies the rolling farmland between two of the South Island's magnificent braided rivers and the Pacific Ocean. While small in stature, Cheviot has attractions and services well beyond its size.

Big blue skies and fresh country air are the base notes for this slice of paradise. The pace is relaxed, crowds are few. Cheviot village is the economic and social hub of this largely rural community of around 1,500 people, where "old fashioned" community values sit comfortably alongside the town's growing art scene and attractive cafes.

Cheviot enjoys a full range of shops and services while just down the road is Gore Bay, one of the South Island's top surf spots and a popular destination for families to swim, explore the rock pools at low tide, fish and dive. The Hurunui and Waiau rivers offer premium salmon and trout fishing and the delicious whitebait.

Check out the Domain at the south edge of town on the coast side, wonderful in the spring with abundant Daffodils.

Cheviot Domain:
A walking track takes you down the Gore Bay road and into the Cheviot Hills Domain where specimen plantings date back to the 1860s. There is a rich history within the Cheviot Hills Domain. Be sure to stop at the cricket pavilion to read the display.

The walking path continues back into Cheviot and is popular with locals and visitors looking to break their journey. There are numerous walking / biking trails through the Domain.

Cheviot Domain – Ready Money Trail walk:
A beautiful circuit through the woodlands of the historic Cheviot Hill Reserve.

Distance: 3km
Fitness Level: Easy - mixed use track

Gore Bay Beach:
Just down the road is Gore Bay, a well known surf and swimming beach and popular holiday spot.

At low tide it is possible to walk around the coast to Port Robinson and Manuka Bay where a track through coastal forest brings you to a lookout above the bay with views to the Kaikoura Mountains and Hurunui River mouth.

For up-to-date surf reports and tide information visit: www.portrobinson.net.nz

Gore Bay - Tweedies Gully walk:
Tweedies Gully track is a bush walk that end at a high lookout point overlooking the coast. It is well signposted but set back from the main street of the bay, by the beach. Look out for the DOC signpost on your right towards the southern end of the Bay.

It traverse the attractive 63-hectare Cathedral reserve with a variety of vegetation and landforms, the track passes through rich broadleaf coastal forest, gradually climbing into regenerating kānuka forest.

Birds are plentiful in this reserve. Return the way you came.

Manuka Bay to Hurunui Mouth coastal walk:
From the southern end of Manuka Bay beach, pass through the gate in the fence and follow the track up through the forest to an open grassy area.

The track crosses this then enters an area of regenerating mānuka and flax. There are examples of tunnel and gulley 'badland' erosion along the track.

It then passes through a stretch of mature coastal forest, dipping into gullies and rising again to give views of the coastline and the nearby Hurunui lagoon. A seat placed on the headland is a fine place to rest and admire the expansive ocean views.

As the track continues to head south the forest gradually thins out before reaching open farmland. At this point the Hurunui Walkway (external site) crosses private farmland for 10 minutes to reach the Hurunui Mouth Road near the mouth of the Hurunui River.

There are fantastic ocean and coastal views from the track.

Getting there:
Drive on SH1 to Domett, then turn down the signposted Hurunui Mouth Road (126 km north of Christchurch). Drive 4 km down the road before turning off down the unsealed Port Robinson Road. Follow the winding road for 4 km then down through a gate to the informal picnic area by the beach at Manuka Bay.

The track can also be accessed from the southern end of the Hurunui Walkway, Hurunui Mouth Road, near the mouth of the Hurunui River.

Nature and conservation:
The Port Robinson area lies at the southern and eastern limits of a number of bird and plant species. The area is known for its abundant bird life.

Know before you go:
The final 10 minutes of track to the Hurunui River mouth is a New Zealand walkway that crosses private land. Stay on the track and do not disturb any stock.
No toilets or water are available on this track.

Rivers close by:
The Hurunui and Waiau rivers provide great fishing for trout, salmon and whitebait. The clean, clear waters are popular with kayakers and jetboaters, and the many swimming holes are a welcome retreat on a hot summer’s day.

St Anne’s lagoon:
North of Cheviot is St Anne’s Lagoon, a wildlife sanctuary that is home to a wide variety of waterfowl.

Golf:
There is an attractive 12 hole golf course is open to the public, an immaculate bowling green, and collection of paper roads and farm tracks are ideal for mountain biking and hiking while road cycling enthusiasts can enjoy the Gore Bay Tourist Drive from Cheviot through to Port Robinson and Domett.

Jet Boating – Cheviot:

As the only jet-boat operator on the Hurunui river, we have exclusive access to over 100km of the river and its amazing variety allowing you to personalise your trip preferences.
