Postira, Splitsko-dalmatinska županija, Kroatia

Postira was established in 16th century whilst the first inhabitants were people from Dol and Poljice who moved out of their villages. Numerous stone houses in the port testimonies about the former Brač landowners; among them stands out the Lazanić family’s castle in which Croatian poet Vladimir Nazor (1876 – 1949) was born. The Parish Church built in the middle of 16th century is called after John the Baptist whilst under it have been found remains of an early Christian basilica from 6th century. Even other archaeological sites witnessing the long history of Postira: Mirje on the Mali brig hill where an early
If you take a walk through the old part of the village, you will feel as if you return to the past times. Moored boats rest around a small bridge from which a number of families greeted their seamen but also eagerly awaited them to come back. Streets paved by pebble stones called kogule with their shapes give honour to local masters, treating them by the fact that they lead to the holiest place - the parish church. Here at Pjaca (square) people danced, sang and watched each other. Closed shutters of the noble houses even today hide secrets about the love meetings succeeded when people came to take water from local fresh water tap, whilst from stone benches games, laughter, quarrels and chatters resound. This small Dalmatian square particularly shines during the fair (fjera) and other holidays as well. A special impression is given by the old tiled roofs which can be seen on the way to the sea, not only for their traditional way of construction, but for the supernatural beings that are believed to have lived in the attics. Macić, vukodlak, marinorgo, as well as fairies will tickle your imagination, particularly if stories about them you hear from the local tellers.

Do not miss the narrowest street called “Let me pass” in Škarić courts, where a large number of konobe (taverns) is located at one place. Friendly hosts will willingly open them and show you what they are proud of.

*kogule– pebble stones used in Dalmatia to pave streets

A number of restaurants and konobe (taverns) will satisfy even the most demanding palate. Magic of tastes and scents is reflected in every dish and what is definitely recommended are salty anchovies, Grilled sardines, pašticada (traditional meat dish), grilled lamb and lamb prepared under the baking lid, mendule u cukar (sugar roasted almonds), as well as Dol’s homemade vitalac prepared of lamb’s entrails (typical dish of lamb or goat offal) and hrapoćuša cake included in the list of protected cultural goods of the Republic of Croatia. Island’s treasure – olive oil is the unavoidable ingredient of our gastronomic offer. Complete your experience by tasting the quality local wines among which is worth recommending Plavac mali.

Just 5 minutes from the Loft there is beach Molo lozna .
This pebble beach is on the east end of Postira and has many facilities, There is a possibility to rent beach chairs and sun umbrellas.
The beach also has a coffee bar, and you can rent scooters, pedal boats, kayaks, trampoline.

Lovrečina is very attractive sand beach far more to the east.
There are the ruins of a large early Christian basilica from the 5th-6th century nearby.

A small village Dol that today has some hundred inhabitants is located two kilometres southern from Postira. This oasis of peace and silence is an unavoidable stop for many tourists, among which admirers of walking and cycling as Dol can be reached from various directions, through arranged trails and paths. At the very entrance, traditional stone houses will leave you breathless as well as a number of caves made of grained rocks of hrapoćuša, once used as lodgings and today being shelters for cattle, containers for firewood, habitat for pigeons, owls and viver*.

*Viver is a mythical creature that, according to the Dol inhabitants’ stories, hides in local caves. It is the creature that can be “found” only in Dol, and if you are lucky you can even hear its hooting.

And if you like active vacation there is a trail Postira-Vidova gora.
It is a trail which connects the north to the south of the island of Brač. Its total length is 21 km with a walking time of approx. 6.5 hours. There are numerous natural and cultural attractions on the trail itself, from archaeological monuments and dry stone constructions to the lookouts and protected natural particularities.

ATTRACTIONS

- kogule: stone pebbles used in the past to pave the important Dalmatian streets.

- the small church of St Nicholas: this small old church (from the end of 11th century) was demolished and a new one was built on its foundations in 1908 . At the beginning of the 19th century there was a bell that rang for the school. Above the wooden altar is a triptych (oil on canvas) by domestic naive painter, Pavo Gospodnetić Bukovac which dates back to 1929.

- the parish church of St. John the Baptist from the 16th century with remains of the early Christian basilica from the 6th century

- Mirje: the monastery complex dating back to the 6th century which stands between two important centres on the Adriatic part of the province: Diocletian's Palace in Split and the imperial quarries near Škrip from which architectural stone was extracted for the monumental palace

- dry-stone walls: made of natural stone without the use of binding material. The skill of dry stone construction is a traditional heritage of the Mediterranean area from the prehistoric times. Labourers collected the stone from the fields and laid it, creating space for future gardens, pens for domestic animals or boundary walls at the same time. Serpentines built in dry-stone that can be seen near to Dol are one of the last monuments of labourers work and effort.

- Gažul: a pastoral village with stone houses and pens for cattle located in the original environment of the Brač shepherds' dwellings on this plateau. A part called “Bežmeka stan” is under the protection of the Ministry of culture. It is part of asingle floor stone house with a courtyard, pens, an oven, a water tank (gustirna) and an enclosed crown and fenced pool. These houses were built by the Gospodnetić ''Bežmek'' family from Dol during the 19th century. At Gažul there is also a mountain lodge known as ''Gažul''.

- Veli gažul: the main Brač stronghold in World War II. Evidence of this is the preserved bunker

- Dalmatian black pine habitat: an endemic tree from the family of pine trees with a distinctive umbrella-shaped crown. It can only be found on the Biokovo, peninsula of Pelješac and on the islands of Brač, Hvar and Korčula

- Korita: a protruding reef with three natural ponds, formed in the bedrock

- Vidova gora: The highest peak of the Adriatic islands (778 m). It was named after the small church of St Vitus which dates back to the 13th and 14th century whose ruins are still visible today. Brač inhabitants have always linked Vidova gora with the ancient Slavic god, Svevid, and and many other fantastic stories were interwoven around it. When there is a clear sky many Dalmatian islands and peaks of the Apennine Mountains can be seen from it.
