Beliggenhet

Yogyakarta, Special District of Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Nestled in the tranquil village of Tembi, Yabbiekayu is just 6 km south of the buzzing town of Yogyakarta and about 20 km from the nearest beach (Parangtritis). Our Eco-Bungalows are located right on the edge of the village and offer uninterrupted views of the rice fields. Yet the city’s highlights such as the famous Malioboro street and the Sultan’s place are just a 15-minute ride away. The popular tourist strip around Prawirotaman and Tirtodupuran is even closer. The most famous out-of-town destination (the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan) can be reached in less than an hour, depending on traffic conditions.

Although Tembi has all the characteristics of a farmer’s hamlet with endless rice paddies, it is well-known as a Desa Wisata (a village of touristic value) itself. Local crafters show their skills and products in various small galleries and the at Gabusan Art Market. You easily can join a workshop on batik making or follow a cooking course and in the renowned local Cultural Centre (Tembi Rumah Budaya) exhibitions and events are organized all year round.

On foot or by bicycle you can follow the small trails between the rice paddies to discover picturesque Javanese village scenes and stunning views of mount Merapi. The Royal Cemetery of Imogiri, the marvelous natural beauty of Gunung Kidul (caves, forest, and limestone cliffs) the mystical black beach of Parangtritis are all within reach. Our staff will be happy to recommend local restaurants and hidden gems you may find along the way. They can also provide assistance with booking and organizing transport.

Hello, my name is Bakti. I run Yabbiekayu since 2012 with my amazing team, including;
The truly awesome Babun our senior guest relations officer, and the charming and delightful Uwik and the loveliest Harnum. Three of them and myself will meet and assist you during your stay.
All of us speak fluent English, have travelled overseas, and have extensive experience in assisting foreigners and Indonesians travelling through Yogya. We will ensure you that you will have a magnificent stay.

What is Yabbiekayu? A Yabbie is a small freshwater crustacean that lives in rivers in Australia, whilst Kayu is the Indonesian word for wood, hence the Wooden Yabbie. The name comes out of a crossover of the prior experience of the founder of Yabbiekayu running an internet publishing company in Australia where he was known as the bigyabbie. This combined with his lifelong obsession with timber, mixed with the feeling of joy of the expression "yippieayu!" lead to our unique name. In many ways the name sums up the experience of a foreigner living in a small village (pond) with a love for buildings made from natural local materials

Yabbiekayu was always intended as communal and friendly homestay, a place to meet like minded people, to relax and to act as a base for exploring the exciting range of activities that the lovely village of Tembi and the nearby city of Yogya have to offer.

At Yabbiekayu our goal is to be a model of ecologically sustainable tourism, creating quality employment for local people while sharing the remarkable experience of life in a small village in Java in sustainably built and managed bungalows. We offer a distinct Javanese style of highly personalised service and as such are here to assist you in any way to ensure your holiday is as perfect as possible, We can help out with requests from hiring motorbikes, masseurs or babysitters to finding a good optometrist, a secluded temple or an exciting art exhibition.

Our dream for Yabbiekayu is to be small, friendly, adaptable and flexible to your needs and wishes. We look forward to your visit.
