Camp Grits offers a camping experience not be found anywhere else in the Smokys. Come stay in our little black cabin in our woodsy yard, put some wood on the wood stove, climb up to the loft and open the hatch: catch the last wisps of camp fire smoke and the owl's calling. Wake up to the smell of your lover cooking eggs, and toasting homemade bread.

Stedet
This 12 x 12 cabin built by my husband Jim from locally milled lumber and salvaged materials, sits about 100 feet from our homestead nestled in these wild woods. There is a beautiful Norwegian wood stove to heat the space in the winter and to cook on. There is a mid century day bed to lounge on or a third guest to sleep on. A propane stove to cook on, and running rain water to wash and do dishes with. There are three solar powered lights, and an led lantern to light the space. There are tea and coffee fixings, and enough cooking utensils to make a feast. The sleeping loft is accessed by fold down attic steps (weight limit 270 pounds). Up there you will find a comfy futon made up with soft vintage linens, quilts and a super heavy duvet/comforter. From here you can access the top porch and look down onto the fire pit area and the woods beyond.

Gjestetilgang
The cabin has it own compost outhouse, easy to use "just use plenty of those pine shavings when your done".There is also a rain water fed sink to wash your hands and brush teeth.
Guests have shared (Tipi and Camper guests) access to the bath house, which has a propane heated shower , and a Hillbilly hot tub (fire lit underneath cast iron tub) which I can fire up with plenty notice, (it takes a couple of hours to heat up).
Also worth noting, there is no cell phone access directly at our place if you have to make an emergency call then you are more than welcome to use our land line or our internet. Otherwise, you will have to drive about 4 miles up the road to access your cell phone provider.

Andre ting det er verdt å merke seg
Breakfast for the next morning will be at your campsite when you arrive; tea and coffee fixings, homemade bread, an egg for each person from our happy hens, and a small jar of Almond or Oat Milk. Also three gallon jugs of our well water for drinking. Milk and eggs will be stocked up throughout your stay. Breakfast can be cooked on the open campfire, wood stove or propane stove provided.
Firewood will be provided for the wood stove. Camp fire wood can be foraged from our yard, or bought at Donna Joe's Subway just a quarter mile down 321 (take a left at the top of Rocky Flats road).

Rocky Flats Rd is a cherished community of wholesome folks and friendly alternative types. It is a neighborhood so expect the whir of a lawn mover, the barking of dogs, crowing of roosters and the occasional "bang bang" of our neighbor's guns on a Saturday afternoon. We love this place and feel absolutely safe here.

I am an British artist who used to make work about the relationship between English folklore, and the new American Gothic; and now find myself homesteading in a shady holler in the Tennessee mountains. We (myself, husband Jim and then not quite one year old son Kestrel) moved out to Cosby in early November 2013. Camp Grits is our labour of love. We work from home building structures, working the garden and entertaining Kestrel with mushroom identification and (harmless) snake hunting. In our sacred spare time I paint other worldly landscapes, and Jim writes equally dark poems. We like to cook, we especially love that time when the pantry is looking bare and you have to use your most creative beans to prepare something pretty and edible. It's amazing what you can come up with, as long as there's curry powder left in the spice rack. Jim is very well read in the classics..I'm very well read in kooky fiction from the 70's (Tom Robbins). Jim likes direct honesty brimming on tactlessness. I like to make light of things. We look forward to meeting you too.

Under oppholdet ditt
We live on site, and I am usually pottering in the garden or working in my studio. My husband Jim also stays home and is either building something (when you are out), or messing with his beloved Triumph motor bike.
