Stedet
This is a sleeping room only. Non-smokers only. Independent-style guest house. Limited "kitchenette" facilities only--microwave, refrigerator and small sink shared with other guests. No common living areas--bedroom only. This room is intended for someone who eats eats at work/school, or eats microwavable or restaurant food. This is one of 3 guest bedrooms on the second floor of the house. The first floor is occupied by a permanent resident. The shared full bathroom with tub/shower is also on the second floor. The bathroom is shared among 3 guests and will be checked and cleaned regularly.

This is an independent-style guest house with 3 Airbnb guest bedrooms upstairs and a permanent resident in a separate downstairs apartment. Your host Maggie lives just a couple of houses down the block, and is readily available when needed. The house is completely non-smoking inside and out, including yard and porch. We maintain a quiet environment to accommodate various sleep/work schedules. As the rooms are located next to each other, please do not have loud phone conversations. Keep audible devices on low volume or use earphones. Room is for guest use only---no visitors, please!

Washer and dryer are available in basement, but have LIMITED HOURS. Not accessible overnight. Washer and dryer that you are welcome to use but please use ONLY FRAGRANCE-FREE/UNSCENTED laundry products.

Free street parking. Comcast wireless internet.

In terms of safety, we have lived on this block for over 35 years (many of them as a single woman). We have had very few problems and feel quite safe. But if you are used to newer, suburban or homogeneous neighborhoods, you may not be comfortable in our working-class urban neighborhood---old houses (some are run-down), occasional neighborhood noise, and a diverse population. As for walking at night, we ourselves feel comfortable doing so as we know the neighborhood well, but others might not be depending on individual comfort levels. The walking route from the Airbnb to downtown is getting better and better as our city has recently added pedestrian-friendly lighting to the streets. If you would like to walk downtown, we'd be happy to suggest the ideal walking route.

Our old and quirky neighborhood is adjacent to the downtown city center. Memorial Hospital and a fire station are just a few blocks away. Therefore, be advised that the sound of ambulances/fire trucks is common. As long-time urban dwellers, we do not notice these sounds, but if you are not used to them, you might notice them. There are fans at the house to provide white noise if needed. This is an old house in an old neighborhood. Please read the LOCATION section for more info.

Neighborhood Info: We love living close to downtown in a diverse neighborhood of old houses, but depending on what you're used to, you may or may not be comfortable on a block that includes occasional neighborhood noise, a few run-down houses and a few interesting characters! Read on for more details about our neighborhood.

The guest house is located on a diverse working-class block of simple old houses and all types of people. The neighborhood is multi-racial, multi-cultural, and multi-generational. Our old and quirky neighborhood is a stone's throw from Memorial Hospital and a fire station. Therefore, be advised that the sound of ambulances/fire trucks is common. Our block is quiet most of the time, but there is occasional noise from the neighborhood and it's possible you will hear the one or two occasionally-loud neighbors on the block. As long-time urban dwellers, we do not notice these sounds, but if you are not used to them, you might. There are fans at the house to provide white noise if needed.

In terms of safety, we have lived on this block for over 35 years (many of them as a single woman) and have had very few problems. As for walking at night, we ourselves feel comfortable doing so as we know the neighborhood well, but others might not be depending on individual comfort levels. The walking route from the Airbnb to downtown is getting better and better as our city has recently added pedestrian-friendly lighting to the streets. Like many neighborhoods near the urban center, our neighborhood experienced decay during the "urban flight" years as people moved to the suburbs, and it definitely suffered during the most recent economic crisis. But thanks to good neighbors, the city, and our neighborhood association, things are on the upswing, and we are happy to be a part of our neighborhood's revitalization.

Lots of improvements have occurred in the past couple of years. For example, we ourselves have renovated two houses on the block, the city has torn down an abandoned house, and another neighbor has turned a vacant lot into a lovely flower garden and even installed a "Little Free Library" there. The neighborhood association and historic landmark preservation group have restored two houses, and Habitat for Humanity built a lovely new home on a formerly abandoned lot. All three of these wonderful projects are just kitty-corner from the guest house. Just across Portage/William Street you will find the Chapin Park Historic District, which has beautiful colorful historic homes on brick streets, and makes for a lovely stroll.

My husband Eric and I enjoy staying in AirBnbs when we travel because we have deeper and richer travel experiences by staying in local neighborhoods rather than in hotels. We look for Airbnbs that are eclectic, funky, colorful, homey, and comfortable. As Airbnb hosts, we also try to provide these features in our own Airbnb apartments and private rooms.

Our Airbnb studio apartments and sleeping rooms are located within a block of our home. We are located in a neighborhood adjacent to downtown South Bend, close to Memorial Hospital and Notre Dame.

We enjoy urban life, but also appreciate nature, bird-watching and solitude. We try to be environmentally conscious about what we eat, where we shop, how we live and how we work. We enjoy dancing, playing musical instruments, running, riding bikes, nature, yoga and our neighborhood's community cats :)
