Originally from Los Angeles, I've lived in NYC since 1995, almost always in Brooklyn, including Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Prospect Heights and Park Slope. Just over a decade ago, I bought a little cottage in East Hampton, so I’d have a place to get away from the city and indulge a maniacal desire to surf as much as possible. Little by little over the years, I’ve been spending more time in East Hampton and less time in the city. Now that my son has turned 18 and started his first year of a BFA at Parsons/The New School, country life is more and more appealing.
When I'm out East, I love riding my vintage BMW motorcycle and going surfing (longboards only) at Ditch Plains. I also love that it's always easy to find an open (and free) tennis court. I'd be happy to share some of my secret spots where you can really get away from the crowds and maybe even the traffic.
For 25 years, I’ve worked as a journalist, culture critic and editor, starting at the LA Times as an intern and most recently at TIME magazine, where I was the Culture Editor. In between I won the “Tabloid Trifecta,” working as an arts-and-culture writer and editor at Newsday on Long Island, followed by the Daily News and New York Post in Manhattan.
I'm a longtime musician, and I've played in loads of bands. Most as a singer or guitarist. You can find recordings by my last band, Caramelize, on YouTube and Apple Music. Nowadays I do a lot of old-school country blues fingerpicking, influenced by Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James and Rev. Gary Davis. If you need any advice on where to see great music, I'd be happy to help.
I love my little house and I enjoy having people over to share it. I especially like meeting new people and hope you'll make yourself "at home" as much as you like. I used to rent out rooms in the cottage, but in March of 2021, I found a 1950 Ironwood 32 “trailer coach” for sale just outside of Flint, Michigan. I saw a great opportunity to create a unique space that would offer guests more privacy and autonomy than a room in the house ever could.
The Ironwood trailer had been in the same family for 70 years and the interior was well preserved. I spent three months repairing major structural damage caused by water leaks, including a rebuild of the entire back end and rotted-out portions of the flooring near the doors. Then came new floors, new upholstery and dozens of little touch-ups and tweaks to make it as elegant as possible. Now all that’s left is to slowly clean off 70 years of oxidation, old paint and dried-out caulking, with an eye toward polishing the aluminum to a mirror-like finish.
I hope you’ll enjoy the exquisite beauty and charm of East Hampton. There really is something for everyone here, whether you love the ocean, shopping, hiking, bar-hopping, golfing, dining, history, art or just plain old socializing. And the Ironwood’s vintage, streamline design is sure to add another one-of-a-kind experience to your trip.
