This course is aimed at people who would like to spend a light hearted 3 hours learning how to make 'sourdough' bread. If you would like a more in-depth course, look for my Sourdough Masterclass experience.

We will spend a delightful morning in my home bakery overlooking the rose garden. I will teach you this ancient but straightforward skill. I shall show you how to make and feed your starter. Explain terms like leavens, autolyse, bassinage, shaping and scoring. During the quiet times while our dough gently ferments you will have ample time to sit on the deck in the garden and enjoy a cup of tea and ask questions.

Fluffy our chinchilla may wander into the bakery and more than likely you will meet Puck and Lilly, our two Border Collies who are extremely nosy.

We start at 8 ish in summer and 10 ish in winter. If you are a single group you can decide on a time that suits you.

The course
1. Introductions, notes, refreshments, overview of the
course
2. Mixing doughs, stretch & fold.
3. Design our Fougasse and decorate it with fresh herbs
from my garden.
4. Shaping and baking
5. Delicious snacks will be served and a glass of wine.

I shall give you each some heritage starter to take home so you can start your baking journey as soon as you get home.

It can be quite warm in the bakery so wear something cool in summer and layers in Winter.

I received my culinary qualifications from Pru Leith, ZA during an adult GAP year in 2016, plus time at 2 artisan bakeries in Capetown. In 2017 I left Corporate Life and spent 3 months as a volunteer in the Peruvian Amazon with no contact with the outside world.

Refreshed, I returned to ZA and www.grainbreadstudio.co.za was born. An artisan bread school where people come and learn an a transferable skill.

Having lived in England, Singapore, Madrid, Ireland, Botswana and South Africa I like meeting new people and hearing about their lives.

I continue to experiment on my long suffering friends & family.

I give workshops in Johannesburg and on request in other parts of the country.

We will bake in my sunny home bakery overlooking my rose garden. I live in Sandton which is very central and about 20km North of central Johannesburg and 50 km from Pretoria.

More than 120 years ago, the richest gold field on the planet was discovered here. Today it is one of the most affluent areas in Africa and is the business and financial hub of South Africa.

The bakery is scrubbed down and cleaned to industry standards.

Lovely day spend with Marion in her baking kitchen and house, this was amazing and so much fun! Her food and lunch was extraordinary, and she is very knowledgeable, kind and welcoming.

I highly recommend that you take part in this experience! Marion is an expert par excellence who explains all of the information, tips, tricks in such a condensed yet hands on easy to remember manner. I loved every moment of it. My only complaint is that it felt as though is was all too short.

Spent a great morning with Marion learning all about sourdough bread making and baking some fabulous breads in her lovely bakery. I would definitely recommend this experience to any foodie!!

What a fun experience! We really enjoyed meeting Marion and her wonderful family. We had such a great time learning to make 3 different kinds of bread. Marion and Francine made a lovely lunch for us and we enjoyed meeting her daughter and playing with her dog. If you are looking for something that is unique and wanting to learn how to make bread this is the experience for you. Bonus you have made 3 wonderful loaves of bread and some great friends at the end!

This was such a great experience! Marion is a fantastic host with a wealth of knowledge and experience! Not only did we learn new skills, but had a really great time doing it and meeting new people! We baked some beautiful loafs and had a fantastic lunch outside.

For anyone who wants to learn more about the magic art of baking, this is definitely an experience to try. Amazing location and all necessary equipment is right there to make you feel like you are a professional baker for a couple of hours! Marion is an awesome host and knows everything about baking. You will not regret taking this experience!
