Dette kommer dere til å gjøre

We will be exploring the shoreline of an old New York City landfill, gasp! Still reading? It's considered "the longest continuously operating dump in the United States", which was closed in 1991. This pile of our history is the highest point in the Rockaways, and a source of treasure or trash alike; shimmering objects of nostalgia gleam for the taking. Artifacts include items from bygone era's such as art deco, prohibition, and the industrial revolution Entering the western shoreline of the man-made peninsula surrounded by a maze of reeds, we'll attentively hike along the waterside on view of Dubos Point Wildlife Sanctuary. Shortly into the walk, low tide reveals vast mussel colonies lining grassy ledges, with the appearance of uncovered remnants from the landfill. Crossing under fishing piers, and meandering upon the crux of deposits, you can carefully search and collect findings at your leisure; with plenty of spots to rest and take in the scene- fishers huts, abandoned vessels, bowing tree trunks, and the cliffside of a small forest. In addition, the reclamation is home to raptors and countless migratory birds- a haven for watchers. We'll discuss the changing habitat, then return from whence we came.

Katherine

Hello, I'm Katherine. I live in the Rockaways, and contribute to a research study about the rising waters. I am here to share the where about of a distinct and atypically beautiful shoreline- a truly "secret spot".

Her skal du være

At the point of reach, the ground's contents limitlessly mesmerize most whom witness it for the first time. If not for the tide, though, most of what we see would remain veiled. The rising water levels will show you exactly how the tides are changing the landscape of New York City. For appreciators, I will offer to lead those of you open to a little scramble, up to the scenic vista overlooking Jamaica Bay, JFK airport, and the Manhattan skyline.
