My name is Wei Qiang, i will be your Host and cooking mentor when you sign up for my Peranakan cooking workshop or any other of my Experiences. I am a Singapore born Chinese Hokkien Peranakan who have been cooking privately and professionally for some years. This is a 93-sqm flat located in North Eastern part of Singapore. This is where I organise different culinary programs, it's where me and my family stay. It is a small but well-equipped kitchen and a dining room. The place has a Scandinavian style furniture with warm colours and several nice decors in order to create a friendly atmosphere.

I have always loved Peranakan cuisine and have eaten it many times in Singapore. When I saw this class, I decided to sign up to learn how to make some dishes. We made sambal petai (actually in my top 3 favorite Peranakan dishes), a savory chicken curry, and the famous 9-layer kueh, a dessert that seems impossible to make (at least for me). Under the guidance of Wei, I managed to make kueh! Every dish was delicious. The apartment is a breezy, airy place to cook in, with a lot of natural light. Wei answered all my questions about local ingredients, cooking techniques, local history and customs, and offered suggestions on where to eat like a local in Singapore. He has the perfect personality for a class like this. He is warm, friendly and knowledgeable. I would take this class again when I come back to Singapore, to learn how to make other Peranakan dishes.

Jim and I would not be able to do it on our own especially the nine layered kueh. A worthwhile peranakan cooking experience Jim had making the nonya chicken curry. The prawn petai dish was interesting too.

Wei was great! Class was fun and informative. We made great food, and he even let us take some with us! Even though the course is in his apartment, it is very welcoming and we felt comfortable cooking with him.

This was a great day. I travel to Singapore often and was looking for something different. The cooking experience was terrific. The lesson took place in Wei's home where we cooked for the afternoon. An experienced chef, he explained the source of each of the 3 dishes and gave helpful hints on slicing, dicing, and cooking. As foodies, we shared our love of international foods and committed to sharing recipes beyond the afternoon.

It was a very personal experience for me and my best friend, both of us Singaporeans, to visit Wei Qiang’s cosy home in the heartlands. She took a day off work, while I was on vacation from living abroad. Wei Qiang shared with us the basics of Peranakan cooking, and tailored the workshop according to our level. It was so much fun as we actively participate in the cooking process while he explained everything in detail. Needless to say, the food quality was spectacular and so fresh. Most of all, it was super fun and eye opening :) It’s been nearly a month since the workshop ended and I’ve made the recipes (Ayam Ponteh) at least 3-4 times for my friends!
