What we do will be tailored to what you want. It can also be conducted using social distancing practices.

During your 2-hour private, educational, mini-course in my experimental 30+-year-old butterfly and insect-friendly mini-wild(er)ness you can either:
-- concentrate on how butterfly gardening works and the plants needed (caterpillar food plants) to increase the numbers of butterflies in your garden or local area, and develop your own plan for your own garden to your own tastes, or
-- just come and visit to learn more and enjoy
with a whole range in between.

Experience the joy, and find out what's possible anywhere on Earth from temperate, sub-tropical to tropical zones, also how butterfly & insect-friendly gardening will help you transform and beautify your place on Earth. You will be contributing to our future, so that we, our children and our children’s children can thrive in a sustainable, healthy and nature-rich world.

Butterflies are "solar-powered". The warmer it is the more there are and the faster they fly. The season is coming into winter in Brisbane and it’s cooling off, so now they may be hiding to survive or alive in another, less visible, part of their lifecycle: either, eggs, caterpillars or chrysalises.

Her skal du være

My plant-rich, inner-Brisbane garden is on 405 sqm (16 perch). Over the 30+ years since it was set up, 50 different species of caterpillar food plants are thriving in a low-watering, low-maintenance gardening regime.
It’s an experimental garden which we'll explore what you can do in your own spaces and places: balconies, small to large gardens, nature strips, local parks, revegetation sites, etc
Please don't expect a neat and tidy garden

The weather was hot and the garden was smaller than I thought, but the story about butterflies and small creatures I heard there was really interesting. After this time, I learned the importance of the hollow leaves eaten by bugs. And if my life is the process of becoming a butterfly, I think about myself as a lava. Thank you Helen for giving me a really meaningful time.

The two hours I spent with Helen was completely rivetting. In a dying planet with rapidly dwindling insect populations, we face losing essential pollinators of our crops food source. Helen's garden was a 30 year endeavour to grow plants that support Australian butterflies. Her sixteen perches were filled with rainforest vines and butterfly trees, like native mulberries. Butterflies and catepillars roam freely. It was a delightful surprise to see butterflies busying amongst the trees. Helen can only be described as a walking encyclopaedia of insect and ecological knowledge. She patiently answered my questions from the basic, "Why are butterflies important" to the very practical questions, "What native trees should I grow to support insects?" I came away with a few things: 1. An appreciation of the importance of insects in support of ecosystems 2. The unique symbiotic relationships between our native flora to the bacteria in the soil which have been forged for millennia. These connections cannot be replaced with exotic plants, and serve to provide more food for our local insect populations. 3. This is not a manicured garden like Roma St Parklands but rather an expression of the intense love Helen has for insects and butterflies. It is very interesting to see full grown specimens of uncommon natives and how many plants can be supported when we move away from the ubiquitous and commonplace lawn. I have learnt so much in the two hours. I developed a greater reverence for the arthropods and saw them in a completely new light. I have written to Gardening Australia to recommend Helen and her garden. I say, Helen as well because without her immense knowledge, I would not have understood as much. Thank you Helen for a lovely informative afternoon. I will be planting native mulberries, and emu foot plants.

For decades Helen has been passionate about fostering an environment to encourage butterfly’s into her garden; both endangered and more common varieties. She demonstrates simple ways where we can create the natural balance in our gardens to attract Nature’s beautiful creatures; the butterfly.

I now know how to attract butterflies (etc) to my gardens, and how crucial that is for the environment ... It's all about having the right host plants for the eggs and caterpillars.
