Let me show you around my neighborhood! We will walk and talk through Kallio, a neighborhood with a plethora of quirky bars, street art, and stunning examples of 20th-century Finnish architecture. Once a working-class neighborhood, Kallio has transformed into a home for students, young professionals, and the elderly pensioners. Kallio has a lot to offer and I want to help you experience a side of Helsinki many tourists do not get to see. Get off the beaten path and explore the cheapest bars in Helsinki (some are under €4 for a pint!), a D.I.Y. skatepark with the city’s best street art, Helsinki’s oldest sauna and its iconic neon sign, and much more. I am also happy to take photos and send them to you by email or text immediately after the tour's completion. We will start and finish the tour at the Hakaniemi metro station Exit C right near the Hakaniemi market.
Other things to note
While you might be apprehensive about how recently I have moved to Finland and the fact that I am not a native Finn, I have an unparalleled passion for this city and country, and I want to share that. Additionally, my time in the army is the best cultural immersion plan offered.

I am a Finnish-American and moved to Helsinki in January of 2019. Growing up, I always dreamed of living in Finland and when teachers would ask me what I wanted to do when I was older, I would reply, "Live in Finland." Now, after years of reading about Finnish culture and history, I am living my dream in Helsinki. Since I have moved to Helsinki, I have biked over 3000 km delivering food around the center of the city, particularly in Kallio.

I also served as an urban infantry NCO in the Finnish Defence Forces during my mandatory military service. I have written about my experiences and put them into a book that is waiting to be published, but in the meantime, I also make YouTube videos about the odds and ends of Finnish history. Check it out! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIHJLKkUrEC9lm7T5YNRefQ

Her skal du være

We will tour Kallio, a historical working-class district in Helsinki that has strong ties to every period of Finnish history. In Finnish, Kallio means "the rock" which will be evident as we walk this cragged landscape, exploring its bohemian streets like Helsinginkatu and Vaasankatu, the iconic Karhupuisto, and the towering Kallion Kirkko (Kallio Church). Escape the crowds (except on market Sundays!) and learn about a different side of Helsinki.

This is something you absolutely need to do while in Helsinki. It's so much fun! Matt is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and ready to answer any weird question you might have about the neighborhood (Kallio), the history of Finland, its food, anarchist saunas, Finnish baseball, you name it. Highly, actually super highly recommended!

This was the best thing I did while spending a few days in Helsinki. Matthew is an excellent storyteller and his passion for history really shined thru. It was so nice to get beyond the tourist neighborhoods and get insights into how people actually live / lived. I learned a lot about Finland that I did not know / was expecting to know.

Mooie buurt gezien, met prima illustraties. Matthew heeft een Amerikaanse achtergrond, wat zorgt voor geweldig Engels.

I had a great time on Matt’s tour! He is very enthusiastic about this neighborhood that has played a unique role in Finland’s history. He showed us many historical and contemporary gems around the neighborhood, and he is especially knowledgeable about the political and military history of the area. I really appreciated the contemporary context that he offered along with historical landmarks. He brings the past alive by linking it with the present. I hope to get his insights about other neighborhoods someday!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Kallio tour! Matt is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and very receptive to questions. He told us many Interesting anecdotes about the political and social history of the area. He pointed out architectural features, significant buildings, parks, and statuary. He spoke about the current culture of the neighborhood and it’s historical context. We explored many places, and enjoyed walking small, out of the way streets. I lived in Helsinki many years ago, and had visited Kallio before, but this tour gave me a depth and breadth of understanding that I didn’t have previously. I highly recommend this tour.

Good opportunity to get alternative view of the city. I really enjoyed it. And Matthew seems to be interested in the history and present life of the area he is talking about. & some extra local tips)
