We’ll start at Harvey Milk Plaza and then stroll through The Castro. We’ll walk along the Rainbow Honor Walk where I’ll share stories about some of the heroes of the movement, like James Baldwin and Sylvester. We’ll stop at the hub for community organizing (before the internet, we had to organize in person!), Harvey Milk’s camera store, and two of the bars that were the site of historic and pivotal moments in the movement (and in my life).

We’ll also stop at a few of The Castro’s major landmarks - the GLBT Historical Society, The Castro Theatre, and Jane Warner Plaza. By the end of the tour, you’ll know so much more about about the people, places, and events that have made The Castro what it is today.

I've been a San Francisco resident since 1972. My life as an activist started shortly after I arrived and has continued to this day. I lived in The Castro in the 70s and knew many of the leading figures in the movement. I demonstrated and organized and have intimate knowledge of the places and events the marked the struggle for gay rights. I was recently portrayed by Michael K. Williams in the ABC mini-series 'When We Rise'.

Ken's tour is not to be missed! I can never walk through the Castro again without thinking about all the stories and histories he shared. Ken is a wonderful human, connects with everyone, and brings the Castro to life through personal stories and gripping narrative.

My group absolutely loved our Castro Tour with local legend Ken Jones. I am a high school teacher sand brought 15 of my students on the tour with Ken. During our time together, we walked the group through the neighborhood, stopping frequently to listen to Ken discuss the historical significance of a building, public park, or memorials. We learned a lot about LGBTQIA history in general, and even more about the Castro specifically. For example, we learned about the creation of the Pride Flag, the beginnings of the movement to fight HIV/AIDS, and the history of the Castro district. Ken is a whirlwind of knowledge, and he peppers his historical information with interesting stories about marches he organized and protests he participated in. What better way to learn about history than from a first-person account of someone who lived through it? Don’t miss out on this opportunity to enjoy and learn about the Castro district with someone who helped make it what it is today.

Last week, staff members, board members and supporters of the GLBT Historical Society were honored to enjoy a personalized walking tour of the Castro district, San Francisco’s internationally famous gayborhood, with community activist Ken Jones. The tour covered over a half-century of LGBTQ history in the neighborhood, taking in Pink Triangle Park on 17th Street, Harvey Milk Plaza at the entrance to the Castro Muni station, Twin Peaks Tavern across the street, the former location of Harvey Milk's camera store near 18th and Castro Streets, and of course the GLBT Historical Society Museum. Jones has been active in San Francisco’s LGBTQ community for over 40 years. Book a tour and support Ken's continued advocacy at kenjonessf.com.

Ken does not only know the history of the neighborhood, he lives it. It was an intimate and moving tour that inspired me to do better in our own LGBT community back home. Don’t pass on this tour.

Ken is a wonderfully sweet person with a very strong connection to the Castro and its history. His passion and love for sharing this community with others only seems to be outshined by his love for the community itself. If you want to learn about this neighborhood through the eyes of someone who's really poured his heart and soul into it, take Ken's tour!!

Ken provided an incredible experience, sharing a wealth of wisdom gained from a lifetime of lived experience as an activist in The Castro, peppered with personal anecdotes and loads of laughter. It was a privilege to share in this walking tour with him, we thoroughly enjoyed our time! I'd highly recommend this experience to anyone seeking depth and breadth of understanding about the culture, diversity, history, and significance of this special place.
