Dette kommer dere til å gjøre
La Isla que se Repite gets started at El Local by JáfanaJafana, the cultural center we created a couple of years ago. Its located in the heart of the historic center, on Calle de la Cruz (12th street). We have many interesting objects, plants and books there, an urban laboratory of sorts where we engage the community and our visitors in creative and meaningful ways. We’ll hit it off with a small talk about the general context of the Colombian Caribbean and getting to know each other’s interests, so that we can cater to them during the walk. The first part of the experience will include visits to the oldest catholic church in South America, the first cathedral founded by Spaniards in the subcontinent, and the Casa de la Aduana, the best preserved building in the historic center. If we're doing the morning walk, we can drop by Alfaix for delicious breakfast while we roam around the public market. We'll take a light dive into GGM's world, Macondo, and its many connections present in Santa Marta. We’ll grab a juice from our trusted street vendor on our way to the river mouth of the Manzanares, also dropping by Jaime Bateman’s grave, a local guerrilla leader from the 80s. The final stop of the experience will be Pescaíto, where football first landed in Colombia, and birthplace of many legends like Pibe Valderrama. We’ll listen to a couple tunes in Manuelito, an iconic salsa joint.
I used to work as a journalist in the US before moving to Santa Marta to pursue a dream project I had for a long time: to explore the intersection between the hospitality industry, Colombia's extraordinary cultural heritage, and a personal longing for meaning. After several years, this exploration is still ongoing and has become the center point of my life. I manage a guesthouse in the historic center of the city and am the cofounder of a cultural center (JáfanaJafana) where my partner and I promote explore alternative, meaningful ways of being samario. Technocrats use the term tactical urbanism. This experience is just the result of being involved in these areas and the region long enough to know a bit about what makes it such an extraordinary place in the world. We are also working on a local guidebook, which we are beta testing.
