Hidden secret gardens, 'baby' Giant Sequioa, Rogues, Vikings and possibly even a monster are the things you'll hear about and see during our walk around the Craigmonie Woodland and Balmacaan Estate. Meeting at my house we'll head towards the old estate and wind our way through a mix of oak and native Scots pine woodland on the path up to the viewpoint. Along the way you'll hear the history of the area from visits by Robert the Bruce, the legend of a Norse Prince who lent his name to a couple of landmarks and a Bard that got into a spot of bother with the local clan chief. The viewpoint itself will give spectacular views over Drumnadrochit and Loch Ness where you can pause and soak up the scenery.

Outlander fans will be delighted to know that some of the locations in the books are set near here and I can even teach you a wee bit of Gaelic to help you along with some of the dialogue.

We'll finish the walk by dropping back downhill and returning to the village through pine and hazel woodland where you can learn about the work we're doing to manage the woods sustainably and how we forage for natural materials to dye yarn and wool sold in the village. On our return back to my house you'll see the end results of this project and have a chance to buy some of the yarn and speak to the artisan who creates it.

I have worked in tourism for over ten years and I have extensive experience working with visitors to the area. I've been a keen hillwalker and natural historian since I was very young and there's not much I don't know about the area we'll be exploring on your AirBnb experience.

Her skal du være

Through the remains of ancient woodland situated above Drumnadrochit. There's the option to explore the jumble of rocks beneath the viewpoint or discover an old 'secret' garden hidden in the grounds of the old estate.

Craigmonie Viewpoint, the highpoint of our walk affording great views over Urquhart bay, Loch Ness and Drumnadrochit.

Toby's Rogues' Picts And Vikings walking tour was the perfect way to absorb the stunning scenery around Drumnadrochit. At a leisurely pace you climb uphill over the former grandeur of the Grant Estate informed by Toby's infectious enthusiasm for the natural flora and wildlife. Everything is done at your own pace and the time passes quickly as you find yourself both relaxed and excited by the wonderful stories of trees, clearings, outbuildings and their nefarious historical secret lives. We chatted about about wool dyeing, Dungeons and Dragons, the world of IT and the Highland Games as well so don't be shy, Toby's a very friendly bloke! At the top of the hill a view over the basin and Loch Ness is a fabulous reward for 40 minutes of walking in this gorgeous place and yes, there's a suitably gory roguish tale to go with it. If you came on holiday to get away from a busy work life in the city, as we did, don't just spend your time racing from one castle to another. Toby's tour was probably the thing I'll remember longest of my wonderful week on Loch Ness and Skye. I hope I can convey our appreciation to him for running it. He has a day job too!
