I will offer you a simplified guidance for the tea-making procedure called bonryaku temae. We will use a tray and you can do this temae on the table. This is usually the first step of sado—the tea ceremony—for students because it is easy to learn and it's a useful procedure. I will arrange the container for natsume—tea powder, the tea bowl prepared with a linen wiping cloth called a chakin, the chasen—tea whisk, and the chashaku—tea scoop. The experience will begin with an introduction to tea and tea ceremony—sado—and I'll give a demonstration of bonryaku temae. You'll then prepare your own green tea by using a bamboo whisk and I will teach you about the formal drinking manners. After the ceremony, we'll walk around this 100-year-old townhouse and take pictures. This house is a very special house because we remained the original architecture since 100 years ago. Nowadays this type of house have been changed to modern house so, it's a good opportunity for you to experience it here.Don't miss your chance to see it by yourself!

I was born and raised in Kyoto. I used to be a manager at a guesthouse in Kyoto, where I noticed that many foreigners had an interest in Japanese culture. I wasn't into this in the beginning, but the more I learned and showed to my guests, the more I became fascinated by the world of tea ceremony. In sado, harmonization and trust between the host and guest is very important. This is the spirit of bonryaku temae, and I'd like to share this philosophy with you through this experience. Also I want to show you Kyo-machiya. Kyo-machiya is unique traditional wooden house, which is deeply rooted in the culture of Kyoto over 1200 years. 50,000 of them still remain in the city, but the number is decreasing about 2% every year due to urban redevelopment. So, it is rare opportunity to enter this kind of house.

Her skal du være

We're located at the Kissako Wazuka cafe . This house is a very special because it still has the original architecture from over 100 years ago.The house's exterior is characterized by Mushiko-mado; a type of window containing mushiko goshi lattice and bamboo Inuyarai to protect the lower malls. Both the interior and exterior have many notable characteristics. Unfortunately, the number of houses of this type are decreasing so come and enjoy!
