A tasting, a baking demo and a food ethnography chat all rolled up into one tasty afternoon, book this special New Orleans food culture experience! Mister Gregory is the only baker in the French Quarter still making traditional Parisian style King Cakes, Galette des Rois. Enjoy the chance to experience a tasting as a VIP, with a small group and Mister Gregory himself. This experience is not open to the general public.

We begin with champagne and a presentation about Twelfth Night cakes on the front gallery over-looking historic Congo Square and Armstrong Park. We then make our way to the private dining room for a Galette de Rois demo by Mister Gregory. You will learn how to make an impressive traditional French King Cake with ingredients easily found in any grocery. While Mr. G's cake bakes we will indulge in a sweet tasting of another King Cake style, the famous dry brioche from the south of France. The highlight of the event is warm French King Cake from the oven. We will also enjoy an iced or hot New Orleans Chicory Cafe au Lait and learn about the history of this special drink. A vintage porcelain feve (King Cake Baby) from France will be a parting gift for you and a memento of our time together.

Mister Gregory "The Shrimp Boil King of New Orleans" grew up in the Gulf South shrimping and boiling. Mister Gregory's Cafe is best known for baking the elegant French style King Cake, Galette des Rois every year during Mardi Gras season. Only a handful of American chefs and bakers produce this traditional cake. Gregory has been a professional chef for over 25 years and consulted on the opening of the flagship Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant on Pier 39 in San Francisco. He is a very well reviewed chef for his restaurants in San Francisco and New Orleans.

Her skal du være

This is a rare chance to relax and enjoy the view from the front gallery of an historic French Quarter Creole home. The gallery overlooks the Rampart Streetcar line and the famous streetlights, the iconic Louis Armstrong Archway and Congo Square. Our rustic Italianate house is one of the oldest wood framed buildings in the Vieux Carre.

Mr. Gregory is a really engaging host. The cake is great, he gives tips on how to do it at home, and he communicates a lot of the history and cultural significance.

I attended with 2 of my "girlfriends" --none of us are bakers but we really enjoyed this demonstration. Gregory's stories gave us an idea of what it's like to be a native of New Orleans. Both King Cakes were delicious, the champagne and chicory were a nice touch. A fun cultural excursion that we highly recommend

Gregory wasn’t there this time around, I believe our host was his mom, who was equally just as fantastic. True Nola natives that teach you through their own experience living here.

Every aspect of the experience felt very New Orleans. The gallery overloooked Louis Armstrong Park where we sipped on champagne. We tried 2 types of Kings cake as well as chickory coffee. Gregory really explained things in a way that gave a good picture of what Mardi Gras is and how it fits in the lives of the people who live there. He gave background on each aspect of the food and traditions, and he made the demonstration look like something I could do. He also gave us the recipe so we could make our own. A gem of an experience even if it was only 1 hour.

The best way to start your day in New Orleans, you would only need to get to the bakery, Gregory would take care of the rest - food, drinks and a couple of stories :) Highly recommend this experience - you simply cannot afford not trying Gregory's King Cake if you are around!
