One of my favorite traditional dancing group will welcome you with a dance routine and song. Right after that, we get on our bicycles and visit historical sites like the hector Pietersen memorial site + the corner where the police confronted the students of 1976 and shot some of them. We will then make our way back to Vilakazi Street to see the Mandela family house and Desmond Tutu's House, which makes the two Nobel prize winners in one street. Join me as we cycle through the houses of Soweto, experience the community and it's warmth.

You can not visit Soweto and not go see the famous Orlando towers, so we'll cycle to the towers, the Soweto towers used to be a power station but now it is a place of entertainment. I'll then take you for a refreshing beer tasting at the Soweto brewery (non alcohol beverages are also available for under age visitors) then I'll take you on a little hike at my favorite hiking spot to view Soweto on a higher level.

We will then end our tour with a traditional Soweto Kota(Local Burger), this is an authentic Soweto meal. It is a hollowed out quarter of bread filled with fries, cheese, sauces and any ingredients of your choice depending on your appetite.

This is a true authentic experience

I am a Soweto born entrepreneur, a cyclist and I am the founder of BOOK IBHONI. The word "IBHONI" is Soweto slang for saying "a bicycle" ..see? you have learned something new already. I love telling Soweto stories and sharing the rich heritage we have in Soweto with visitors.

I having been hosting visitors in Soweto for the past 4 years, have won awards locally from LeadSA and Dept. of Agriculture and rural development, I am a brand ambassador for Brand South Africa & I am a qualified South African Specialist by South African tourism.

We will cycle the only street with 2 Nobel prize winners, after learning the history we will then make our way to the Soweto towers. A refreshing beer tasting(and non alcoholic) stop on our way back, a bit of hiking and see Soweto on higher ground. We end with lunch in Vilakazi street.

Great experience, and a best way to see and experience Soweto! Cycling around with Mpumpelelo was very interesting and he made us feel very welcome in his neighborhood. We saw some important sights, heard a lot of stories about them, went on a beer tasting and had an amazing lunch. I can only recommend this experience.

We had a great time on the tour - this is a must do experience if you want to see Soweto and what it has to offer. We were lucky enough to have a private tour for two. While Mpumelelo was unable to join us for the day we were taken care of by Molefe (pardon a likely incorrect spelling!) for the day and had a wonderful time. We had the opportunity to experience so many unique things and aspects of daily Soweto life that you likely wouldn't get if you came to solely experience Vilakazi street. The beer stop was great and the lunch was a meal and a half! I would love to return to Soweto some day and wouldn't hesitate to go on the tour again as I imagine you could learn something new each time!

Our bike tour of Soweto was absolutely perfect. Mpumelelo and his colleague Molefe were patient, knowledgeable, warm and very helpful throughout the entire tour. My wife and I felt a strong connection to them both and they took their time answering our questions and sharing insights about the history of Soweto. We enjoyed all the stops along the way and Mpumelelo and Molefe ensured we captured the moments and left with memories to last a lifetime. Tremendous value for money! This was the perfect way to experience the rich history and culture of Soweto.

Would highly recommend this tour, the terrain was not too hilly and we cycled to places we would never have went to by ourselves. We felt safe and welcome in the area and gained brilliant insight to Soweto and times of the past. Delighted we didn’t do the bus tour we had previously planned as this was an experience we will never forget. Thank you!

Great experience in Soweto! Mpumi was so knowledgeable as was his colleague Mlofe. They really made us feel welcome in Soweto and we learned a lot. This was one of the most memorable experiences we had during our whole South Africa trip. The bike riding was accessible to different fitness levels and you definitely don't have to be a professional cyclist to enjoy the ride. You could tell that Mpumi was really involved with so many different members of the community and was passionate about Soweto. Would definitely recommend this experience as a must do if you're planning to visit!

Our bike tour of Soweto with Mpumi was one of the best travel experiences I've ever had, full stop. Biking through Soweto was a much more authentic experience than roaming in a pack of walking tours or viewing a community through a bus. We covered more ground and got to have real conversations with Sowetoians about life, history, the current state of affairs in the country, and what makes Soweto special. Biking was also a real way to learn the differences between the various parts of Soweto, which is a rather large place with tons of nuance. Be prepared to dismiss preconceived notions of the place and the people, and you'll get the most of the tour. Mpumi takes you to off-the-beaten path spaces as well as the greatest hits (except the museums, which you can easily do on your own). The magic of the tour was how we were able to adapt with sudden torrential downpours. We ended up at a Braai spot next to the Soweto tours and got to vibe at an impromptu day party with some of the dopest music on the continent spinning. We didn't get to meet some of the cool social entrepreneurship programs Mpumi works with because of the rain, but his energy and passion for Soweto and SA is infectious. Most of the actual bike ride is super chill, but there are a few hilly parts. If you want to ride them, just know you'll have to work a bit. Otherwise, pushing works and there's no pressure. Can't recommend this experience highly enough. Definitely a highlight of our SA trip.
