We'll stop first at FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City, before we make our way to the Welcome Sign of Soweto to take pictures at Diepkloof Soweto. Then off to the Diepkloof Migrant Workers Hostel will be next, to see how the migrant workers used to stay. We'll then go to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the third largest hospital in the world. We'll see Orlando Towers, which stand as the largest landmark of Soweto, and we'll take a little stop at the Hector Pierterson Museum to learn more about the student uprising which took place on 1976. We'll walk the famous Vilakazi Street, home of both Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela—the world's only two Nobel Peace Prize Winners to have lived on the same street. I'll take you to Credo Mutwa Cultural Village—Kwa khaya Lendaba and Ophenheimer tower. Credo Mutwa the traditional healer, renowned philosopher, and famous for some of the worlds deadliest predictions like the USA twin tower bombing and HIV and AIDS. We'll also go to Oppenheimer Tower for a 360-degree view of Soweto and get to climb the 49 steps of the tower being a symbol of the 49 townships and houses which the Ophenheimer family played a role in building in Soweto.

I was born and bred in Soweto—the largest township in the southern hemisphere—and grew up moving around its streets. That’s how my love of showing visitors around and wanting to teach them South African history from a local's perspective evolved. I hosted Derek Hanekom minister of tourism for his first-time visit to Soweto and also, Basetsana Kumalo, the former Miss South Africa and I've been featured on a article on The New York Times Newspaper.

Her skal du være

I personally love the history and significance of the Hector Pieterson Memorial, which reflects the Class of 1976's protest against the laws introduced by the Apartheid Government and the abolishment of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction. Vilakazi Street home of the only two Nobel Peace Prize winners in the world found living in one street, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Mpilo Tutu. Orlando Towers standing as the tallest landmark of Soweto.

Phiwe was a very charismatic, knowledgeable and thoughtful guide! Although we visited amidst the Covid pandemic, he ensured we got the most out of our experience and showed us all of the main sites alongside others we weren't expecting to come across or hadn't known about. During our walk through the various neighbourhoods, many of Phiwe's friends and neighbors greeted us and we got to meet his father and grandmother. Additionally, we received complimentary drinks and delicious local food. Safety did not feel like a concern throughout our entire stay with him. It was certainly a worth-while, enjoyable and education experience - thanks Phiwe!

I highly recommend Phiwe's tour to anyone who wants an honest, passionate and entertaining tour of Soweto. He lived up to his reputation - he was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and was attentive to our needs. We ended up discussing about all sorts of topics and definitely formed a friendship by the end of the afternoon. If you are looking for a very authentic tour of Soweto, I would recommend you book this experience! There was no issues with safety at all. If you are sensitive to the sun, I recommend bringing some sun screen and an umbrella/hat.
