We'll meet up in Kyoto at an easily accessible point (Nijo station), then drive up into the mountains and watch city change to country, learning about the history of the Old Mackerel Road. Upon arrival at our mountain village, we will have some tea and take in the the surroundings. Then the farm tour will begin where we will discuss the vegetables growing at the moment and do a few farm chores. Then it is time for lunch, often featuring some of our organic vegetables, to be eaten up a mountain trail or next to the river. After lunch, it's up to you: - a chance to learn more about the farm and give us some much needed help ; ) - a guided hike in the area featuring some very large trees - a dip in the clear, refreshing river that runs right by the farm (please byo swimwear) - a scenic drive - a visit to the Ohara vegetable market or shrine - a browse in a countryside antique shop or local museum - a trip to the hot spring bath high in the mountains (this takes 3 hours total) Then we will take our time driving back into Kyoto city and arrive at our pick up location in time for supper. If you have a larger group we can arrange a rental vehicle to accommodate you with enough notice. Please contact me for more information.
When I started farming in a small mountain village 11 years ago by myself, most thought I was a bit crazy. Now so many people come up for the day and fall in love. It doesn't take much for folks to enjoy themselves in such a beautiful place and everyone smiles a little easier going home. I also give presentations on farming and do what I can in Kyoto to provide opportunities for everyone to learn more. Nature and farming and have become my passion, I am lucky to have this to share.

Our route takes us up through the surroundings of Kyoto city which are as rich in history as they are picturesque. The mountains in which our farms reside are quite scenic and full of life, great for hiking. The farms are vibrant as the ecosystem there pulses with a wild intensity. The clear river is spring fed, full of fish and great for a cool dip on a hot day. Our mountain house is quaint and comfortable.

Please be ready to experience the mountain wilderness of Japan firsthand. It can be much cooler up there so a light jacket and pants might be a good idea. Don't forget your cameras and appetites!
