Tour begins at Riva, waterfront promenade, next to a place where once stood city Lazaretti, quarantine and harbour complex built by Portuguese Jew Daniel Rodriga, man who turned Split into important town. It continues with the Diocletian's Palace substructures where we will find early medieval Menorah carved on its ancient walls, marking possible location of the first synagogue in Split. While walking through the Diocletian's Palace, we will visit the once Jewish Ghetto and an alley locally known as the Jewish Passage, with the 16th century Synagogue, which we will tour accompanied by members of the local Jewish community. Please note that on certain days Synagogue might be closed. At the nearby square you'll see the third oldest European bookstore founded by another important Jew Vid Morpurgo. Right in front of it is a place where Italian fascists' burned holy books and furniture from the Synagogue in 1942. Another WW2 spot will be at western part of Riva, where Nazis executed Jews and members of the resistance in 1943 and 1944. Tour ends with easy ascent to Marjan forest park, with 1573 Jewish cemetery and the most beautiful view on Split. Throughout tour, you will also learn about 17 century of history of Split

My name is Ivica, and I am a journalist, blogger, and a licensed tour guide. I was born and raised in Split, Croatia. I like to discover different layers of history of Split, and almost 2,000 years of Jewish presence in this area is one of the most fascinating. Although not of Jewish origins, I was always interested in this community's contribution to Split and its heritage. Also, one member of my broader family was awarded as the Righteous Among the Nations.
COVID-19 guideline: This tour is for smaller groups, families, or individuals. That makes them very safe in terms of distancing, and easier to control. Face masks are not mandatory in Croatia, but I usually wear it, especially indoor, as well as using hand disinfectant and avoiding physical contact with guests. Knowing Split allows me to avoid bigger crowds.

Ivica did a great job tailoring the tour to our interests, taking the time to answer our questions and to give us extra information that we appreciated. He was very knowledgeable about history, and we got an excellent tour of Diocletian's palace as well as the history of Jews in Split. At the synagogue Ivica introduced us to an entertaining elder member of the Jewish community who gave us additional insight into Jewish Split. Although the old Jewish cemetery was closed the week of our tour, he led us to the cemetery gate on Marjan hill and took advantage of the view to explain what happened to Jews at Fort Gripe and point out other sights. He left us with personalized recommendations for what we would enjoy seeing the rest of our time in Split. We're so glad we took Ivica's tour!

Ivica was wonderful to get to know Split and the Jewish experience with. We went to the third oldest synagogue in Europe and got to meet Albert who was and is a party of the Jewish history here. Ibiza’s English was perfect and he knew how to explain things well. We walked and talked.

Excellent source of knowledge about the Jewish presence in Split. He showed us the markings in the palace to indicate a Jewish presence. Plus, we saw the small unique synagogue. Lastly, we walked up steps to visit the Jewish cemetery. I was certainly enriched by the whole experience.

Ivica is a very personable and knowledgeable tour guide. A journalist with an interest in local history, he is able to enlighten you about many aspects of Split's historical and cultural influences. The Jewish population was around 300 (or 10% of Split's population). They were mainly Sephardic Jews who had been expelled from Spain and Portugal. They had a very big impact on this city's cultural and economic development. There are now around 120 Jews still living here and one of the oldest Synagogue's in Europe is based here and still functioning. Seeing the Jewish quarter and Ghetto was fascinating and also the Jewish cemetery in Marjan. You can buy a brief history of the Jews in Split from the Synagogue for 30 kuna. I highly recommend this tour as it is different from the other tours available here. Ivica speaks excellent English and has a good sense of humour. This has been a highlight of my visit to Split.
