After a briefing on safety for you & our primates, we take you on a guided walk through our UNESCO listed research site where we will introduce you to the majestic Hanuman or the Grey langur, and a small troop of very active & gregarious Toque macaques. We'll follow them closely for a small part of their day while they venture out to feed & interact socially with other species, animals & sometimes even us! As we continue walking through the park, you may also meet Maya, Kip & the other 'actors' of Disney Nature's Monkey Kingdom if they are within the area! The final search is for the most elusive of these primates, the Purple faced langurs who live mostly on the highest canopy and would not necessarily engage with the other species. At the beginning or end of the experience you'll get a chance to learn more about the monkey kingdom while we watch a documentary and enjoy some tea & coffee. Some days there are spectacular territorial fights between inter species or langurs & macaques. On other occasions there are hours of grooming sessions, with some younger monkeys approaching our guests with a bit of inquisitive curiosity towards the bags they hold, or just to groom you!
Other things to note
After the monkey tour you are free to see the world famous archaeological ruins, and a cost of USD$25 payable to the Sri Lankan government is mandatory and not included in our monkey tour costs.

If you are in the area you need to do this tour. We went on the animal kingdom monkey tour with Sunil today and it was a wonderful experience. Sunil has a great understanding of the animals that he showed us, built by studying them for more than a decade. His English is flawless meaning he was able to really educate us on the intricacies of the animals we were observing. He is clearly passionate about his work and it was a true pleasure to go out with him. I can not recommend this tour highly enough. It was a real highlight of our entire trip. Can not wait to do the loris tour tonight. Thank you all.

Although the experience was supposed to be about monkeys, SunilR also told us a lot about the ancient city and gave us helpful tips for how to tour it after we were finished with the monkeys.

If you are really into monkeys then it may be interesting for you to stay here and do the monkey tour. For us, our guide did not seem that interested in conversation and we felt like it was a bit of a bother for him to be doing this tour. Also, it’s a lot of just standing around in a very hot, humid environment. You have to pay the entrance fee of about $25 each, and then when the tour is done, you can’t leave the place and get back in again, so you are touring all the ruins in the heat of the day, and there is really no good food inside the complex- only snacks. So overall, I would not do this again.

This was an excellent experience. We spent the morning walking through the ruins while been expertly educated about various monkeys. The level of knowledge and insight was excellent and everything we asked was very clearly explained. This is a unique experience and I'd highly recommend it.

Our family of 5( three kids aged 15, 12 and 8) really enjoyed our night loris and our monkey tour. The highlight for the kids was hand feeding the 6week old baby macque monkey its milk - an unexpected treat. The monkey tour took place in the wonderful setting of the Polonnaruwa ruins in the relative cool of the early morning - be warned it is HOT in this part of the country!! Our guide waa great at not rushing us but letting us take our time enjoying watching the monkeys and encouraged the kids to sit down and let the monkeys groom them. He also arranged bikes for us to tour the ruins afterwards and a nice breakfast and dinner was made for us at the Monkey Camp. Make sure you allow time to watch the Disney doco before you do the monkey tour so you have a better understanding. The only catch is that you do need to pay the entrance fee to the ruins on top of the tour cost. We understood this was an optional extra after the tour and planned to see the ruins the afternoon before so didn't have much time left to tour them after the monkey tour.

Really fun experience, but wildly overpriced for what it is and what you get. No transport was set up (at least for me) leading to my having to ride sans helmet on the back of the guide's bike, which was unexpected. The tour itself consisted of staying in a single 20m stretch just off of the main road for an hour or so, before moving to one more location for a few minutes to see the rarer sort of monkey. Getting brought to a place where you can be sure to see the babies and a higher concentration of monkeys is cool, for sure, and if you have the money to spend it's an excellent way to start off a day in the ruins, but I can't help but feel it's highly expensive compared to other options in the area, especially considering that you WILL see monkeys just wandering around the place. If I could rate it 3.5 I would, because on the one hand, it got me some great photos and watching all the babies was really cute, but not enough there to justify a $90 price tag.
