Geneen Massey and Aaron Dorfman have lived in the D.C. area for more than a decade. Since Bladensburg Waterfront Park is just a 10 minute drive away--and a peaceful, relaxing hour or so kayak to the National Arboretum from there-- it's a favorite go-to for fun, exercise and time with friends.

As an educator, Geneen has worked with students from age 9-adult. She received her M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (2011) and has endorsements in Journalism and Reading (Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner).

Her skal du være

Once we've pulled in our kayaks, guests will enjoy a walk through the Asian collection. Next we'll have a restroom stop before heading to our picnic site to hear the story of The Peace Tree, based on a true story. After lunch we'll visit the Peace Tree and surrounding gardens before kayaking back to Bladensburg Waterfront Park.

We had a wonderful time kayaking with the family and visiting the Arboretum with our knowledgeable guides Geneen and Aaron. We saw the whole experience through their eyes and they were able to pass on their love for nature and for the location, which is surely a must-see in the DC area. Thank you!!!

Our family of five (including two teen boys and 9-year old daughter) loved this kayak+canoe excursion to the Arboretum. Geneen and Aaron were kind, patient and very knowledgeable hosts who shared their love for the area and provided unique insights into the ecosystem and history of our surroundings. Along the way we saw several turtles, egrets, ospreys, many flowers (even a late blooming dogwood) and visited the impressive Bonsai exhibition in the Arboretum. Logistics were a breeze with conveniently provided water bottles and a sandwich lunch at the Arboretum. Paddling the kayaks and/or canoe was a good workout but the pace was relaxed. Gracious hosts, beautiful surroundings and a nice dose of exercise made for a great family outing. Thank you Geneen and Aaron for this memorable trip!

This is an excellent change of pace from the museums. Scenic, feeds the soul, just the right balance of learning cool stuff and just having fun.

This experience was such a great idea—mixing kayaking with a visit to the arboretum. But what made it really nice was the extra attention Geneen and her husband Aaron put into our experience: bottles of water, a towel to dry off any wetness, a snack during the trip, and a plastic trash bag for those who wanted to pick up floating plastic along the way. They were both super friendly and tried to share the history of the area with us; not just the river but also to point out some particular aspects of the arboretum once we got there. And the beauty of the trip is that you can do it repeatedly because the foliage and blooming along the river and in the arboretum changes throughout the year.

This was a great experience! Geneen is an excellent host. The morning our experience was originally booked, Geneen immediately contacted us to share reports of high winds and offered to reschedule for anyone who did not feel super comfortable kayaking on more challenging waters. We decided to reschedule for a calmer day and had a wonderful time learning about the river and arboretum from Geneen. She shared a beautiful story about The Peace Tree, and gave us the option to do our part to protect the environment by cleaning up the river as we enjoyed our relaxing trip. Geneen provided a lunch for our picnic, as well as any supplies we needed for the activity. We were also given a brief tutorial for those of us without much kayaking experience. I highly recommend both Geneen as a host, and the Kayak to the National Arboretum experience!
