Join me on my favorite farm ramble, complete with a few surprises!
We will start with a little history and geography of this specific piece of land involving a famous "Lord" and will progress to a nice walk with some unique farm features.
I will share with you how multiple generations survived and evolved from carrying water from the spring and harvesting ice from a pond to now abandoned horse drawn farm equipment.
We will see a colonial road that looks quite well traveled and was the site of a Spanish Real coin find.
Next we will explore the dam and ice pond fed by Elk Run Stream and maybe even get a glimpse of some local wildlife.
Continuing on our walk we will see one of the first electric pump houses in the county which was pumping running water to the main house in 1913.
We will continue up the colonial road next to a stone wall for a view of 3 other states and a nice birds eye farm view.
Explore an 1840's stone barn and even see the graffiti left by a civil war soldier passing through. We can also see the system my grandfather used as a boy to keep track of the squab he sold to local restaurants.
End the tour with some photo ops of various farm equipment including the tractor my grandfather bought new in 1947. Leave the farm with the rewards of a nice country walk and good dose of fresh air.
Other things to note
Wear comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing. This is not a fast walk but does include a few rolling hills.

I invite you to join me for an outside walking tour on a working dusty, rusty and always beautiful 230 acre farm near Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Bring your farming questions and interest in the area and I will do my best to introduce you to the history of our family farm.

A lifetime country kid, I now live on the same land where six generations of my family before me lived and farmed. Needwood Farm has a rich history which has been well preserved due to the same family owning it for 150 years. I have recorded my father's accounts of his youth here as well as dug into some amazing genealogy and even unearthed a few interesting treasures. Since returning to live here, I have started a small flower farm and taken an new interest in sustainable, balanced farming practices.

Her skal du være

Our walk of about 2 miles takes place through the fields and flowers of Needwood Farm. We will stroll past abandoned buildings and up to the 1840's barn. Take in the beauty of walking through an open field and seeing various wildlife. Hear stories of how the train makes the coyotes howl at night and the best spots for catching and releasing fireflies.

Heather is a lovely host and storyteller and gave us a wonderful golf cart tour of her large farm on a hot summer day. She was also very flexible with us in terms of scheduling.

This is a great way to learn about local history and farming in the lower Shenandoah Valley. Heather is a phenomenal guide who has the perfect touch of sharing information and stories, while also allowing our group to meander and socialize on our own. The setting and historical structures (dating to the early 1800s) are quite interesting and lovely for strolling around.

Had a great personal tour by Heather with decades of history on her family land. Very open to good conversation along the walk with good knowledge of the area. Would recommend highly to travelers.

I wasn't sure what to expect as I booked this without reading more than the title. I was staying in Harper's Ferry and wanted something low risk and interesting. Heather delivered. It was great to hear about her family's 100+ year history on the farm, the local history, learn a bit about farming, and take a lovely 2 mile walk around the property at the same time. Heather is also very kind and personable. I'd highly recommend checking this farm out when in the area!

I was excited to checkbook out a local farm while I was visiting Harper's Ferry for the weekend. Heather was very knowledgeable and shared her family's 100+year old history on the farm. It was really interesting to hear her family's history in such a historic area. The civil war history and family history was really interesting. The farm is beautiful and the 2 mile walk was well worth it. Heather was also extremely personable. If you're in the area Is recommend stopping by.
