The Dogs of Chernobyl program treats the descendants of dogs that were abandoned after the 1986 nuclear disaster. These animals face hard lives in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, constantly fighting for basic necessities like food, water, and shelter during the harsh Ukrainian winters.

During your virtual visit we will meet and feed some of the abandoned dogs who live at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. You will learn about our mission and history treating these incredible animals. After meeting some of the dogs, we will visit the scene of the disaster at the Unit 4 reactor.

Your interactive virtual visit allows you to see an environment where people have been prevented from living for over three decades. We will be spending most of our time with the beautiful four-legged friends that roam the power plant and providing them with food. Feel free to bring your curiosity and questions. You will learn about the history of the region, the nuclear power plant, and the work that is currently happening at Chernobyl.

This Experience is great for team-building. Looking to reconnect with your colleagues and teammates while working from home? Send me a message!

My name is Lucas Hixson, and I along with my co-founder Erik Kambarian, first came to Chernobyl over 5 years ago. My background is as a radiation specialist and before coming to Chernobyl, I monitored environmental contamination in the United States.

In 2016, Erik and I founded Clean Futures Fund, a U.S. non-profit organization that supports the workers at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and affected communities. In 2017, Erik and I started the Dogs of Chernobyl program, in the last 3 years we have vaccinated and sterilized over 1,500 animals. In 2018 we received permission from the Ukrainian government to begin rescuing and adopting puppies from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone to forever homes in the United States and Canada. To date we have adopted over 40 puppies.

Dogs of Chernobyl is an absolutely wonderful experience that anyone who is a fan of pups or the history around the disaster would enjoy. The host, Lucas Hixson, is extremely knowledgable and provides a very smooth, well-designed experience that gives a lot of fascinating insight into the process of taking care of the dogs and the current situation surrounding the former power plant while guiding you through the area and answering any questions. And of course, the best part is that you get to meet lots of really sweet dogs! It’s a wonderful way to spend an hour that will definitely put a smile on your face. I totally recommend it!

I can't say enough about this heartwarming and caring experience. It was so informative and interesting and the experience gives you hope that there are good people in this world like Lucas. The Chernobyl dogs are not forgotten; the workers and children of the area are not forgotten and 100% of what you pay goes directly into this good work. There is beauty and hope in this world, even in the tragic setting of Chernobyl. And the stories of the dogs, seeing how they are taken care of, and your own interaction via this experience was a beautiful way to start the day.

A very compelling experience with a guide that was extremely knowledgeable - a super immersive, interesting and educational experience. Definitely expensive, but given that the funds support the cause, well worth the investment.

I got this experience for my father for his birthday. He says "A fascinating and unique experience. The “dogs” story is an interesting subplot to the larger story of the disaster. Lucas is a very engaging, personable as well as highly informative tour guide. Asked for and answered all questions from our group. Highly recommend!"

After 30 plus online experiences, I more or less know what to expect....so that's what I thought! Of all the experiences I've taken, this is one of the very few "traveling/walking" experiences that is truly LIVE on location, this one even involves driving around! Lucas is live in the exclusion zone driving to different locations feeding dogs and showing us what the area looks like today. The exact visiting locations within the exclusion zone may be slightly different for each expereince since Lucas is really out there doing his job feeding and interacting with dogs. This experience is so much more than just meeting the dogs (and yes, they are so cute and they all have a name!), Lucas talked to us about the history of the dogs, the program he has been running the past few years, and life (and hope) inside the zone. The last location we visited was the town center, and after feeding the dogs at this location, Lucas showed us memorials built here in remembrances of the tragic event that happened more than 30 years ago. Lucas spent an extra 20 minutes with us answering all of our questions and would have stayed even longer if he didn't have to go feed more dogs before the end of the day...and we didn't want the dogs to be hungry! I highly recommend this experience, not to mention 100% of what we pay go directly to the non-profit organization Clean Futures Fund.
