NEWTOWN WALK - 3 hour walking tour
Did you know that Newtown was originally known as Brickfields? That’s because, at the end of the 19th century, the bricks for the new mining settlement of Johannesburg were made here.
We begin with a special visit to Craft Coffee, a hidden gem located just past the graffiti which adorns the walls of the highway bridges. From there, you will trace the history of Newtown from brick-making, power stations and markets to its influence in music and the arts – and now its urban regeneration. Important stops along this unique route include The Market Theatre, the Workers' Museum, a private visit to Artist Proof Studios, as well as a stop at Nelson Mandela’s law practice office at Chancellor House, and finally Randjeslaagte, the triangular piece of land on which Johannesburg’s first mining camp was established. And it’s not all history; there’s plenty of trivia, public art and a stop for coffee or a refreshing ale too.
Other things to note
Don't be afraid of Johannesburg's reputation for crime. Yes, there are hotspots, but you'll be in good hands, and I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you find. It's a city with a tough past and a big heart, great energy and a vibrant art, music and restaurant culture. Come and explore!

After gaining a BSc. (Hons) degree at Cardiff University, I gained my global tourism experience in educational tours, ski tours and incentive travel. I operated my own business in the incentive travel field for 8 years. When age 40 hit, I relinquished overseas journeys and settled into tour guiding in Johannesburg, which has been my home since 1992. I am passionate about showing both the everyday and the hidden Johannesburg to visitors. My passions include music, literature and art, and I am able to incorporate these themes into my walking tours of the city.
‘One thing I wish I’d understood in school is that the word History is simply a contraction of the words His Story; it’s just someone’s story! Now I act as a story-teller, bringing the history and culture of Johannesburg to life in a fun and informative way.

Her skal du være

We walk in the Newtown area of downtown Johannesburg, where we enjoy a mixture of history, trivia, public art, graffiti - and a beer or gin & tonic along the way. We include the obvious but we go off the beaten track too; something for everyone!
